Re: The Audrey Hepburn Appreciation Thread
Looking back, I concur. The fifties and early sixties brought about an excess of vapid, escapist, conformist (to "Father knows Best" type standards) drivel from film studios, of which Charade (1963), featuring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn was exemplary.Sisifo wrote:As an Icon, she represented a step down of femininity to me. With her, women in movies passed from being mysterious and intelligent (20s-30s), even malicious and manipulative (40s), to just being a face to put on a dress.
When I first saw that movie I was in my sub teens. The style, elegance and a tale well told appealed to me. Since then I have grown up somewhat, and realised that there is no substance at all to go with the fluff. In fact, as you said, it is a step in the backward direction. Yet, despite the vacuity - not to say the reactionary nature of this film - I still feel some attachment to Hepburn (as well as Grant and a number of other actors that chiefly appeared in fluff).
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops. - Stephen J. Gould

Roman Holiday suited her well. She was darling in the role of the princess. I love that scene at the cooking school when she's learning how to crack eggs.

I recognize the name, of course, but she was before my time. She was very beautiful, though, I'll give her that most definitely. Reminds me a bit of my twin sister.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

As beautiful as Hepburn was (either one of them), here's someone even more so:

Claudette Colbert

Claudette Colbert
"Her eye was on the sparrow. Her mind was on the dove,
But no one cared and no one dared to speak to her of love.
Her eyes are always hooded. Her claws are sharp as steel.
We teach her not to see too much. We teach her not to feel."

Colbert's eyes always seemed just a smidge too far apart to me. Pretty, though, in a Hollywoodesque way.

No, you can't ruin it. She's gorgeous. No way around it.

Re: The Audrey Hepburn Appreciation Thread
There is no way Colbert beats out Audrey Hepburn. Not a chance. IMHO, Audrey is number one on the all-time beauty list.

From the movie You, Me & Dupree - says it all:

From the movie You, Me & Dupree - says it all:
Molly: "So, you really were serious about Audrey Hepburn, huh?"
Dupree: "She had it all. Style, grace, ethereal, beauty. Just like I thought Mandy did."
Molly: "I don't know. I have a hard time imagining Audrey Hepburn getting buttered up to Funky Cold Medina."
Dupree: "Really? I don't."

No offense to the Colbert fans, but she's not even in the top 10.Bella Fortuna wrote:Colbert's eyes always seemed just a smidge too far apart to me. Pretty, though, in a Hollywoodesque way.
I mean...Grace Kelly? Ingrid Bergman? Lauren Bacall? Gene Tierney? Bridgitt Bardot? - and that's just the pre-1960 ladies.
Grace Kelly comes into the top five for sure - she may be right behind Audrey.
