30) The Dark Crystal. Jim Henson's very ambitious puppet film. Still holds up well thanks to Brian Froud's gorgeous production design, and the mad inventiveness of Jim Henson, Frank Oz and the rest of the creative team. Just astonishingly full of rich detail and creative whimsy and delightful humor. Also, though ostensibly a children's film, not too dumbed down or sanitized/emasculated.
I shouldn't have watched the extras first, because while watching the film afterwards, the puppets looked more puppetty than they would otherwise have, having already seen how they were created and performed. Still a great technical achievement, and so beautifully done.
Oh and I had the biggest crush on those Gelflings when the film first came out. I suppose I still do.
I give it four and a half out of five Aughra's detachable eyes.

32) The Reflecting Skin. Strange film, but in a good way. Beautiful, poetic, weird, creepy, sad, depressing, and funny. I give it four and a half out of five exploding frogs. Lost half a point for the stupid ending.

33) Men In Black 3. Worth a watch, but a bit of a disappointment. It's impossible to dislike Will Smith, but even his charm can't save this rather lifeless film. Not all bad. Just could have and should have been so much better. There was some good stuff here, too, but even the good stuff didn't really work for some reason.
Also, needz more pugz.
I give it two and a half out of five Warhols. It was okay. Just okay.

34) Dawn of the Dead, the Zack Snyder version. I've never seen the original so can't compare the two. But I really liked this one. Great cast. I loved Sarah Polley in Gillian's Munchausen, so was excited to see here here in an adult role. She did a fine job. And the look and feel of the film, thanks to Zack Snyder, is stylish and appealing. But it's not a case of style over substance, as in his later Sucker Punch. It's not style just for the sake of style. I thought it was well done. Great story, great characters with distinct personalities that you actually care about, and lots of unexpected twists and turns. Also a lot of nice little touches that made the characters more human, and that kept the film interesting and lacking in cliches.
I give it four out of five severed limbs. Lost a star for not making me cry. I only give five stars to films that make me cry.

35) Dark Shadows. I can take Tim Burton or leave him, so wasn't expecting an awful lot here. I was pleasantly surprised. Depp was perfect in the title role, the rest of the cast was great, Chloe Moretz gets a chance to do it doggy style on camera despite her age, and there's a wonderful cameo appearance by an aging but still cool as ever rock singer (ugly as she is). The tone of the film felt just right to me, pitch perfect. Whereas Men In Black 3 had some great material that fell flat for whatever reason, be it performances, direction, timing, or what have you...everything here just worked. Also a lot of great visual detail. It was lovely to look at.
The funny bits were funny (more quietly amusing than laugh-out-loud funny), the spooky bits were spooky (in a fun way), and the dramatic bits were dramatic (not to imply that the film takes itself seriously- it doesn't). All in all an enjoyable and entertaining romp.
The film is not without its problems, however. The main theme of the two rival fishing companies competing bored the shit out of me. I suppose a device was needed to propel the story forward, but I would have preferred spending more time getting to know the family. Also, subplots are developed and then ignored, only to be brought again unexpectedly and unsatisfactorily later on. Characters are introduced that seem awfully important, central to the story in fact, and then promptly forgotten or, again, brought back in only a half-assed fashion later on.
Despite it's flaws, I liked the film enough to give it a rating of four out of five C-hairs. No, not cunt hairs. Chloe hairs.

Upon reflection, I'd like to now amend my rating for Dark Shadows, changing it to three out of five Chloe hairs. So, above average, certainly enjoyable, but nothing to really write home about (unless you've run out of other things to say).

Re: The 150 Movie Challenge - 2012 Edition

Well, I'm in late. Can I count movies from MST3K since I am watching the movie, even though it's much more entertainingly being disassembled by Joel/Mike and the Bots?

Anyhow, a quick calculation says I need to hit 87.5 by year's end from June 1 to match the 150/year pace... let's call it 90.
  1. Dark and Stormy Night - **** - w/d Larry Blamire - A note-perfect sendup of the old haunted-house-on-a-hill movies, and even a cameo by Bob Burns (in his gorilla suit, of course). Blamire's probably better known in the genre community as the man behind the hilarious 50s sci-fi sendup/homage, 'The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra'. DaSN is even funnier.
