12) Super 8. had some subplots that went nowhere, and shit that didn't make a hell of a lot of sense if you thought about it too much, but was actually much better a film than I was expecting. Some pretty decent acting, dialogue that didn't make me wince for a change, good characterization, and not too bad of a drama. In fact I liked the dramatic elements of the story so much, I was actually kinda disappointed when the fantasy bits were introduced. It seemed almost unnecessary. I also liked that there was some real emotion here, but it never got over sentimental or cloying. Also, a great sense of period. The cars, the clothes, the hairstyles, the dialogue, the music, all were authentic and had me longing for the 70s again. Also it was a rather beautiful film in the way it was shot. Just some lovely scenes, great color palette. And there was some cleverness in the way the scenes were shot and the camera work and such as well that I admired.
All in all despite its flaws quite enjoyable. I give it four out of five Dakota Fannings.

13) Real Steel. Better than one might expect for a film that's basically a live action Rock-Em-Sock-Em Robots, and of course I cried at the end, but not much more than a pleasant diversion. Because of its inherent limitations, I give it two and a half out of five huge jackmans.

8. Coffee & Cigarettes - Odd Jim Jarmusch montage of short films - each involving people drinking coffee and smoking. Nothing much happens and not all of the pieces really work but the cast list is stellar: Roberto Benigni, Steven Wright, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Bill Murray, Steve Buscemi, Cate Blanchett... it goes on. If you love Jarmusch's style, you will find lots of it in this. I do and I did.

14) Transformers Dark of the Moon. Yeah I know I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel here but my friend lent it to me so there was no financial investment or anything. Funny thing is, I was expecting this to be an utter piece of shit but I actually kind of liked it. It was fun. No cinematic masterpiece by any means, but enjoyable in a popcorn munching sort of way nonetheless.
I'm too old to have watched the cartoon as a kid and so have absolutely no emotional investment in these characters, and yet I nevertheless ended up rooting them on by the end of the film. Probably the great voice actor who does Optimus Prime helped.
I thought the beginning of the film was kinda clever the way it incorporated archival footage of JFK. Rather jarring soft core porn passage after that, but then back on track for the rest of the film. Shia LaBeuf did a surprisingly serviceable job in the lead role.
Awesome cast as well. Like a who's who of Coen Bros films: Francis McDormand, John Tortorru, John Malkovich, all hamming it up delightfully in their roles. What I didn't expect was for the film to be so funny. It actually had some great humorous bits. The Asian dude who had a clandestine encounter with Shia's character stole the show for me. No idea who the actor was but he was fucking hilarious.
Anyway, it has its obvious faults but despite this I give it two and a half out of five botox lips.
Oh and I can't help it but it's just so fucking cool when those things transform :awesome: :dunno:

15) That's What I Am. A story set in the 60s about bullying. Figured it'd be just my thing, having grown up in the 60s and being bullied a bit. Had a distinctly After-School-Special-made-for-TV feel to it, though, mixed with an annoying dollop of Wonder Years, which was a little off-putting. Adult actors were pretty good for the most part, with Ed Harris holding things together nicely, but the young actors really weren't so good at all. Still, had its moments and wasn't a total waste, though happy I only paid a couple bucks for it. I give it two and a half out of five banana seats.

16) 50/50. Very nicely done drama/comedy with a wonderful understated performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and a great turn by Seth Rogan. Well acted all around, actually. Good drama without getting at all maudlin or over-sentimental. Cried at the end. I would like to have laughed and/or cried a little more. But on the other hand, I really liked the subtlety and restraint shown in the film, and thought it was overall very well done. Four out of five Max Headrooms.
