Here every village still has a church and some of them go right back to Norman times - there are still a few old Saxon ones in out of the way places. Most of course lay empty and even on a Sunday all but the largest are silent and bereft of worshipers.

Right though that is, I would be sad to see them demolished, even though they serve no purpose any longer. The look of our towns and villages would change drastically and for the worse I think. Still, no point in the just sitting there rotting I guess.

well, here too, the mark of a real village is it's parish church, anything not large enough to have a church is below the radar, it won't have a post office either, maybe not even a café.

In catholic areas which are below the great rivers there are hundreds empty. Plenty 19th century. Completely useless. With the reduction of the number of parishes from 51 to 5 even more are standing empty.
In the urban areas of the west plenty were built in the 50's with the baby boom. The presumption was that more would be needed which of course was further from the truth. These are usually terrible in design and construction. The problem is the Dutch Reform Church has no money to knock them down so as to reuse the land.
