The ecumenical deficits of Catholicism
The ecumenical deficits of Catholicism
Something I overheard a few days ago on the train. A Catholic woman told the story about how she and her prospective husband were forced to participate in a two day seminary on marriage before being allowed to marry in church because he is a Protestant.

Protestism is just some made up, anything goes form of Christianity by a bunch of untrained amateurs who think they can just read whatever they want into the Bible without proper instruction. The Church just are just making sure any children aren't brought up in what amounts to a form of atheism.

Yeah, but are you a Catholic atheist, or a Protestant atheist?
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Just a general question. I think I'm probably a Taoist Atheist.

Prods are already atheists. That collection of capricious beliefs compared to the Vatican's arcane knowledge and holy hierarchy is like comic books to fine art, or rap to poetry. It's not a true belief. It's like giggling kids playing with a Ouija board.

The Catholic Church pre-empted such silliness would happen if people just read the Bible however they pleased. Look what happened in the German city of Munster within a couple of years of Martin Luther's silly thesis.

Re: The ecumenical deficits of Catholicism
When my cousin was married to a third generation British-Italian woman the Italian side of her family insisted that he be confirmed into the faith - and 3 months of lessons later he duly was. They had the full Catholic wedding, with all that standing up and sitting down again, alter boys, full choir, Bishop swinging in at the reception like a rock star to say grace and to bless a happy and fruitful union. Two kids and happy families all round. Only when she was sacked did it come to pass that she'd been working her way around her workplace as the office bike, and that when her number was up they were probably going to have to bury her in a Y-shaped coffin. They split up and she shacked up with one of her lovers and the kids. Her family disowned her and got gert feisty about my cousin meeting their access demands to the grandchildren - to such an extent that he hardly had any time with them to himself. He had that out with them, and they basically said that he hadn't so much as married their daughter as married the church, and that the church was his real family now. His relations with the Italians became fraught with demands and recriminations, and when he took the kids on holiday without telling the grandparents they went to social services and said he and the ex were neglecting the children (he didn't have custody, just access remember) and offering to adopt their own grandchildren. They were supported in this by an advocate provided by the church which was, as an organisation, apparently, concerned about the mortal souls of the kids as much as their welfare. This dragged on. The ex moved from one deadend relationship to another and the kids ended up spending more and more time with their dad. In the end the courts granted him full custody and a week after the judgement came through he changed jobs and moved out of town.
