and Yemen still practices FGM... that's not anywhere in the quran or hadith, but very common in rigorist muslim countries.

The problem is that those people who understand Shara differently (as personally following religious rites) seldomly make the news.

yeah, because they don't have the imams and ulema wiith major influence making tatwas for their side... they basically have little power in defining what shari'a is.

I mean it's seldom the grand mufti of al hazar of of mecca or any of the top mullahs in Iran open their mouth and deliver fatwas in favor of modetation

Sharia Law is no different to any law - it's all 'Don't do that or else' really.

yeah, but in places lie Saudi or Yemen, it says to not do things that appear ridiculously normal to us, and the 'or else' is disproportionately harsh.

Actually it was tolerated by Mo'Hamhead . Seems he could ban chess, musical instruments and alcohol but not slavery or FGM
The incidence of FGM ,often claimed to be an African cultural problem, is increasing across the whole muslim world .

True. I'm not a cultural relativist when it comes to stoning widows for accepting bread from a non-blood-relatives, imprisoning the victims of rape for adultery, or lopping off the hands of children. Sure the moral and the law shifts over time, and it's different in different parts of the world, but subjecting people to cruel and unusual punishments is unjustified in any social, cultural, historical context. When people talk about the supposed threat of Sharia it's essentially no different than the threat posed by any self-declared authority (religious or otherwise) who sets themselves up as law-definer, decider, and punisher.
