Well, you know that's one way to look at it. If swim class is like math class, I guess. They also have assault weapons in every home, so, they must know better.Svartalf wrote:Not weird, Swiss... the Swiss are the most conformist of people, so ANY school activities are part of the compulsory schooling, and that trumps your religious convictions. If you don't like it, get find a private school that won't have objectionable activites and that will allow your weird quirks, and put your kids there.

Those are not extracurricular activities. They are part of the official schedule. The trips over several days usually combine social interaction with an actual educational topic. According to some Swiss news articles, it is by the way Evangelical Christians that cause most problems with wanting their children excused from these activities in Switzerland. Same situation in Germany.

Sprawling on the fringes of the city
In geometric order
An insulated border
In between the bright lights
And the far unlit unknown
Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass production zone
Nowhere is the dreamer
Or the misfit so alone
Subdivisions —
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
Subdivisions —
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out
Any escape might help to smooth
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth
Drawn like moths we drift into the city
The timeless old attraction
Cruising for the action
Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night
Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight
Somewhere out of a memory
Of lighted streets on quiet nights…

If any handshake should be banned, it's this one -- http://www.theamericanmirror.com/video- ... hake-fail/ dorks...

Those are not extracurricular activities so I agree that they should be fined...Forty Two wrote:A father can get fined for not allowing his kids to engage in extracurricular activities? Weird.
I hate siding with Islam on anything, but, frankly, this kind of fine sounds like considerable overreach on the part of the State.
But I don't understand why she can't just go swimming. They make swimsuit for Muslim women that covers everything.
In the case of the handshake... not sure about that one. How integrated is it into Swiss culture that you shake hands with others?
I would not want anyone to force me to shake hands with anybody so I think I would side with them on this matter.
I read the whole thread though and started to wonder... don't we have a special area for philosophy here?
I´m just a delicate little flower!
