It is easy to mock, though how were our ancestors suppose to answer this very question? They didn't have the knowledge we have now, It is quite easy to see how religion evolved. Even now look at how many people who are non believers still cling to some dubious moral code. There probably exist some part of the human psyche that needs this belief just to function, obvious not with all humans but with a hell of a lot of them.

It's a basic inherited human trait, to form a mental picture of a living entity, to explain physical occurrences that we don't understand.

From an evolutionary point of view, this is an advantageous trait.
In wild Africa, many predators hunt mainly by night. So the only way that you can be aware of their presence is from signs found in the daytime. So you see signs, and picture what kind of creature made those signs. It's a fundamental way of understanding your environment, that helps you stay alive.

So when modern people see things that they don't understand, it's perfectly natural to attribute those signs to some kind of entity. And the bigger the mystery, the bigger the imagined entity.

And that's why, when we first began to ponder the cause of the bigger things, like how the world came about, we imagined a superhuman entity. As no human was capable of creating worlds, that seemed obvious.
