Proposed Australian Convention 2010 (Melbourne)

Post by Sparticle » Wed Jun 24, 2009 2:18 am

Thought it worth posting here - the AFA (Atheist Foundation of Australia) are trying to get together a convention in 2010 (proposed dates at this stage March 12-14) in Melbourne. They are hoping to get Professor Dawkins down here as a guest speaker, and other proposed speakers include Phillip Adams and Catherine Deveny (hold me while I swoon!).

The cost is estimated to be $AUD250 at this stage.

They need expressions of interest though. If enough are received, as I understand it, the convention has a real chance of going ahead. Already there are a few of us who have put our hands up (quite frankly, I'd camp out for tickets to this gig).

Here is a copy/paste of the post on the AFA forum, which contains the email address to send your expression of interest to. So what are you waiting for Aussies? :woot: (and anyone else willing to fly halfway around the world I suppose!)

Please pass this on to anyone else you think may be interested in attending the convention.

Cheers.

Wonderful news everyone! A very exciting occasion is heading our way next year. Atheist Alliance International, of which the Atheist Foundation of Australia Inc is a member, is proposing we combine with them in having a convention in Melbourne in March 2010. With guest speakers the calibre of Richard Dawkins, Phillip Adams, Catherine Deveny, and yet to be finalised notable international and national presenters, it will be a once-in-a-lifetime event not to be missed. The convention will run from Friday night 12 March until Sunday midday with the cost of registration and meals about $250 per person and less for concessions. The theme is “The Rise of Atheism.”

We are still in the early planning stages but it would be of great assistance if those who have an interest in attending the convention contact head office by phone, letter or email and let us know. An estimate of numbers is critical to the success of this venture. Just write the word “Convention” in the subject line when replying by email.

See you there!

David

Oooooooooohh... It's pie in the sky at the moment - but oooohhhhhh - I'd love to got to such a thing.

Would you hypothetically put me up for a short stay, Sparticle, to make this more feasible on a student budget?
Then they for sudden joy did weep,
And I for sorrow sung,
That such a king should play bo-peep,
And go the fools among.
Prithee, nuncle, keep a schoolmaster that can teach
thy fool to lie: I would fain learn to lie.

Darling! Yes, I would indeed (if you don't mind sleeping in a teenage boy's single bed - clean sheets assured though 8-) as we don't have a spare room and I'd have to unload Junior to his dad for the weekend).

Oh hang on - I need to check if I've already told Durro he had stay. I can't remember! But hypothetically yes, it is indeed possible.

PS: I haven't forgotten I owe you an email. I ever was a tardy correspondent. :flowers:

Hey I'd sleep on the couch, or the floor, or the garden shed, or a tent in the garden! I'm not too fussy that way - so long as it's comfy and protected somewhat from the elements.

It's alright - I think I can be like that, too. :flowers:

I will keep my eye open for this...

Would be tricky in term time, unless there are evening or weekend sessions...
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?
And my gin!

Enjoy your term holidays from today

Don't forget to take pics! There is no way that I could turn up. Too expensive.

:lay:
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

They were hoping for 800, but early expressions of interest have far outweighed expectations. Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre now booked for 2500! :woot: http://twitter.com/atheistcon
