I'm after some examples how religion suppresses free thinking. Cheers.

The fact that it demands "belief" is already thought-suppressing. Believing means "not knowing", because if you knew you'd know, but when you don't know you believe, duh.

Anything which has dogma attached to it. The Catholics and Muslims are best at this I find.

Galileo.

The guy who was burned for saying there were planets around other stars.

He did cross my mind. What about Copernicus? Did they try to shut him up, too?

No, but he was "shown "the instruments"" during interrogations. Twice.

No. But he did appear before the inquisition and had to apologise for his claims of heliocentrism (based on Copernicus' earlier work.)

This guy was burned at the stake though - although it is not clear whether it was for his scientific views or for his heretical xtian ones.

Many were burned not because of any free thought but just because their husband wished a new younger wife.

"Current scholarly estimates of the number of people executed for witchcraft vary between about 40,000 and 100,000.[1] The total number of witch trials in Europe which are known for certain to have ended in executions is around 12,000.[18]"

This whole thing was sponsored by the Catholic church. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witch_burnings

I was referring to Giordano Bruno, btw, when I mentioned the guy that got burned. The space between "Galileo" and "The guy who got burned . . ." was deliberate.

Remove "free" and what are you left with?

That is your answer.
