I read a Nelson De Mille book, "Wild Fire" where the plot concerned nuclear terrorism. Plot spoiled in here a likkle bit:JimC wrote:It is perfectly possible to be critical of the West's partly bungled response to terrorism, specifically the Iraq war, while still seeing militant, fundamentalist Islam as a major threat to people's safety around the world, and wanting effective, and if necessary, bloody action against them.Twiglet wrte:

Re: Do you hate Islam ?
Just wanted to reiterate...
I fucking hate Islam. It is a disgusting, foul, horrible religion, with no redeeming qualities of which I am aware. It brings misery to the world, oppresses the individual, crushes the human spirit, destroys liberty, and spreads complete and utter falsehoods.
Islam is a monstrosity. I hate it.

That video in the beginning is unfortunate. As a pretty dedicated Individualist, it still makes me wish there were better social support structures that reached further globally.
Secondly, I question this thread's existence on this forum. How can we discuss the perspective of a muslim and the question of do we hate Islam without an adherence to some sort of rules of argument? If the question is a discovery type question, then there should be little argument but more like "oh, I understand what you feel a bit better." But if the question is a respectable argument, then points should be organized. Otherwise, we just reiterate our own comments and re-entrench ourselves to our pre-existing beliefs. What's the point? It's not open minded, and it's a painful subject for the pro-Islam to be unpopular and for the majority atheists to have to walk the line between speaking plainly and being respectful.
Specifically, in the beginning the Mandel makes a comment about the approval of Bella's avatar change and I found myself reacting a little strongly. On one hand, if someone has an avatar issue, they should say so. But if this is a place where religious tolerance happens, it seems a little unnecessary because of the premise of the group.
Opinions?

Threads can be on any number of topics. Some can be organized, others not. Some can be humorous, others not. The person posting the OP controls the topic and the nature of the thread, which is often influenced by how those who post react to the topic.
In this case, Mandel asked whether people hate Islam, and why. It seems quite appropriate to state in response whether one hates Islam, and why or why not.

I'm not disputing that. Nor am I personally holding anyone accountable. Maybe an improvement on my post: would Mandel like to take a more systematic approach to a conversation? 'Cause isn't it obvious that most of us have a distaste for Islam whether we would call it hate? Isn't that a common factor?Coito ergo sum wrote:Threads can be on any number of topics. Yeah - but you have to know Mandelson - he's basic an Islamic troll. He's not interested in an open discussion.camoguard wrote:I'm not disputing that. Nor am I personally holding anyone accountable. I, for one, am happy to discuss things openly and with an open mind, but I do know enough about Islam to know it is, in my view, worthy of contempt, derision, and loathing and is a legitimate source of dread. Even "moderate" Islam is that.

I think Quakers are fucktards. But by the merits I tolerate them better. Unitarians seem like people who almost got the memo. And Islam and Christianity are folks who just want to be right by virtue of repetition and it's just not sporting. It's like those significant others who want to try one more time even though you've expressed everybody is miserable in the situation. It's not about the relationship (i.e. religion), it's about what really works.

Quakers? Or Quaker Christianity? Aren't we always warned when criticizing Islam that it is unfair to lump "all" Muslims together? Remember, it's not "all" Quakers that are fucktards.....camoguard wrote:I think Quakers are fucktards.

I don't know what that means. I think it's about what the adherents of a particular cult do. If a person is a member of the "Flowerism" religion that deifies floral arrangements and has the basic tenets that flowers are pretty and it's nice to give flowers to your girlfriend, then that religion is of little or no concern to me. If a person is a member of a religion that oppresses women and homosexuals, and often seeks to impose religious law on non-adherents, seems largely antithetical to freedom of and from religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and other basic human rights, then it is dreadful, and worthing of loathing, contempt and derision. I hate that religion, and I think rightly so.

I have good reason to fear some of the more extreme elements of Islam but "hate" is a too simplistic word because I would hate to think I would be jumping into bed with fundy Christians who potentially hate Islam with far greater zeal than any atheist because they believe their god is bigger then theirs .
Just because more people believe Jesus is the son of God and not the son of Satan does not make it any truer.

Re: Do you hate Islam ?
For me, it's not just the "more extreme" elements. The run-of-the-mill, standard-everyday Islam is an abomination in my book. It may not be violent, but it is oppressive, and a huge percentage of its adherents support the imposition of religious law on people.A Monkey Shaved wrote:I have good reason to fear some of the more extreme elements of Islam but "hate" is a too simplistic word because I would hate to think I would be jumping into bed with fundy Christians who potentially hate Islam with far greater zeal than any atheist because they believe their god is bigger then theirs .
I just view it as a continuum of disapproval - Buddhism - meh, it's woo, but not particular dangerous or much of an imposition - Christianity, woo and depending on the form it can be a real bugger, I don't like it at all - I find its metaphysical claims absurd and its effect on the world as largely negative - strong dislike -- Islam, woo and dangerous woo at that - weapons grade woo - it's like a dangerous cult with a billion followers. I hate it.
