Scientific pantheism therefore is just a diplomatic form of atheism which Einstein warmed up to. He might as well of been more up front like Hawking and said god was not required in the creation of the universe and does not exist and be done with it.
Yep. "Pantheism is sexed up atheism." - Richard Dawkins.

In A Brief History of Time Hawking predicted that by 2000 there would quite possibly be a 'theory of everything', i.e. something which unified or made sense of the contradictions inherent between special relativity and quantum mechanics. He has invoked something called 'M theory' (please don't ask!) to do this at least in part, one might cynically suggest, in order that the 'theory of everything' is achieved.

Now I don't understand the maths obviously and Hawking has always been ace as far as I am concerned, but there does seem to be some element of vanity in this agenda.

Just sayin'

BBC Newsnight is going to have a feature on this in about 30 minutes or so.

Animavore, I can summarize these books for you. When you look at STUFF on really small or large scale, everything goes weird. Time and all that shit is stretchy and the universe is stretchy and odd shaped and you are at the center of it all points. Better to go back to thinking of atoms as the solid models in the atomic model set from college. Sticks for bonds.

Well I have read other books on the same topic. Brian Greene is rally good. I'm not sure if hawking is all there any more. All that dodgy speculation on aliens and his recent crap fest on The History Channel is kinda putting me off any new books.

I was moved to tears upon hearing news of this on the radio driving in to work this morning, so despite some people's misgivings, I'm just glad there are credible people like Hawking out there saying there's no (need for) god.

It's made the churches and theists go into severe damage control mode ... maybe the odd person wavering in their "faith" will just go "Fuck it, that wheelchair guy's right."

I knew it, common sense would pop up. Common sense is OK for watching farm animals reproduce etc.
