Actually, they don't. Most earlier religions are similar. The whole "redemption through faith" thing is a very recent addition. Religions evolve, you see. Along with the societies that invent and maintain them.
The thing is, religion has evolved itself out of any need for existence - it's just that most theists have yet to recognise the fact...
