Have you actually ever looked at Godwin's law? Apart from being meant to be a joke, it's also meaningless. "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1." You may as well replace "Nazis or Hitler" with "X". And it doesn't say that therefore the thread is at its end, let alone why or how.

You're right. It works with "bananas" too, or "the". It's a completely meaningless statement of probability.

There's a long thread over at JREF about how it means nothing except as a joke response to any mention of sHitler. I've never tried to shut a thread down by invoking it, and ignore anyone who tries. Not much for hall monitors.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

If you know of anyone who has ever burned a blank sheet of paper, let us know here so we can arrange a burning in effigy, the storming of buildings, the murder of innocent people, and more besides. :mob:
