OK, I lied. I do that. I'm doing it now, as a matter of fact. Really.

Oooh.. I remember one! Saturday <- dies Saturni <- Saturnalia. It's also the last day of the week, corresponding with the Jewish idea of God's day of rest. Saturn being the father of Rome's god (Jupiter), it was already a holy day and so easily merged with the Judeo-Christian theology retaining its original name but eventually losing its original significance.

Re: What were you before you became and atheist?
Would it be inaccurate to describe our names for the days of the week as a North European gloss, artificially superimposed on the Roman 7-day week? Is Rome not the true source of the christian religion? (and our calendar, and the Common Era itself?)Feck wrote:If our cultural root is Christianity... Without Rome's all-pervasive influence, wouldn't christianity just be another middle eastern religion for us westerners to get phobic about?

The names of the days of the week in Korean. The first character is the Korean representation of the Chinese character. The second and third just mean 'day of the week'. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%EC%9D%BC ... 4%EC%9D%BCPordFrefect wrote:What's that there thar funny squiggles and why does only the first one change?FBM wrote:Feck wrote:If our cultural root is Christianity... As it was the Greeks who got it going, not the Bedouin rejects, I doubt it would even be a mideast thing.Exi5tentialist wrote:Would it be inaccurate to describe our names for the days of the week as a North European gloss, artificially superimposed on the Roman 7-day week?
