The boy scouts have fairly good rules to prevent leaders being left alone with a kid. But one campout I and another dad, neither of us trained, were the ones in the camp with about 10 kids all morning as the "trained" dad had to leave early and the main group still had not returned from overnight hike. The dads and moms cannot sleep in boys' tents.

It is well known that pedophiles actually look for professions where they have access to kids. Some of them go to enormous lengths and build a whole life around their means of access to a source of victims.

Sounds plausible, but can it be backed up with statistics? One would expect that the percentage of paedophiliacs among kindergarten teachers would be higher than among university lecturers, at least in the decades before screening was de rigeur.

I have not seen any statistics yet that show a higher percentage of paedophiles among priests than, say, among process workers either. What gets me about the catholic church, though, is the persistent and systematic coverup and protection of them by members of its hierarchy at least as high up to the level of Cardinal (Ratzinger). It seems to persist despite protestations to the contrary.

I'm not aware of any and I probably would be if they existed because of the work I used to do. One of my tasks before I retired was managing the so called 'Safeguarding' systems for schools in my county including organising training fopr school staff through our staff development unit.

Anecdotally I can tell you that the numbers of 'trusted' adults who get found out feels high to me. I used to get summary reports for my county every year and the numbers of teachers, youth workers, residential workers - oh and even an occasional foster parent - and the like who had been nabbed or investigated was quite large compared to other adults.

Not surprised in the least. It seems it takes the Catholic Church to do this on an industrial scale, but most of the other smaller churches are not immune. They were just further away on the radar.

What a surprise, there are pedophiles within organizations where children are present.

I guess if there was some sort of atheist organisation that said avoid the police as its controlled by christians then you would get the same sort of abuse but luckily no sort of organisation exists

Quite so. This was the case with schools at one time too, when the head master/mistress would 'have a word' and the teacher would be quietly moved on.
