I listen to every syllable of every word of every sentence I hear from Mr Hitchens.
He has done more for the cause of dialogue "about God" than most religious and it is always good when people talk ABOUT God.

Satan is the one who encouraged us to have awareness and seek knowledge and enjoy the fruits of the world , while God wanted us to remain naive and gormless and frightened and feeling icky about ourselves and each other , and have eyes only for him . Satan encouraged discourse while God circumscribed it .

Actually, if there were such a being as Satan, I would think he'd want people talking about god - asking questions, pointing out inconsistencies, and the like. It's God who seems to hate questions. After reading the bible, I don't recall god praising thinking or intellectual pursuits.

I wasnt trolling. I just wanted to say thank you to Mr Hitchens for reinvigorating apologetics/counter-apologetics.

But I suppose we could have a discussion about satan.

I understand there are some here who call satan a myth but lets open with Charlou's framework re the Garden of Eden and knowledge.

As I read the account in Genesis I see God telling humans they can do anything they want but warning against the consequences of doing one single thing.
God says - if you do "that" - "this" will happen. (you will die)
Satan contrariwise says that God is lying. That humans don't need to bother about what God says. Satan wants humans to ignore God.
Note that satan doesnt tell them...there is no God. Merely that God is irrelevant.
What is that single thing God warns against? The knowledge of good and evil (free will and its potential consequences)
Satan (as in the story of Job) wants humans to have free will because he mistakenly thinks that he can get them to reject God.
All of satans temptations to people (including his failed effort to tempt Jesus) have one thing in common - they all say..."dont worry about God - have this instead"

It is practically the cornerstone of theology - the question of free will and what we do with it. God says seek me. Satan says ignore God. God says come to church. Satan says stay in bed and sleep in.

Now why on earth would satan want people to have "informed consent"? I mean real information about the substantial matters of atheology. The last thing in the world he would want Adam and Eve to do is sit down and think deeply about religion and good and evil and whether there is a God (or someone called satan)

Why bother indeed. Anybody who believes in the creation of Adam (as in Adam, the individual) by a God thingy, is totally impervious to debunkerisation. It's not a far stretch from there to believe that Eve fashioned from one of Adam's ribs, talking snakes et cetera. These days I prefer to laugh at people who seem incapable of seeing primitive beliefs for what they are.

I think you are missing the point.

It's not about "debunking" Genesis or that lame old atheist debating technique...."theres no God - I win" (Which is the intellectual equivalent of the theist who says God can do anything - you lose)

The question being put here is whether or not polemicists who elevate the topic of "God" to the New York Times best seller list are being too smart by half. Ask yourself, how many atheists read The God Delusion or God is Not Great then consider how many "emotionally aroused" theists bought these books.

I argue that Mr Hitchens kicked a hornets nest. That Mr Dawkins should have left sleeping dogs alone. Instead, more people are writing more new apologetics books. Religious people themselves are saying...we have to get rid of those strawmen extremists and pedophiles that New Atheism continually misrepresent as being mainstream religion. Thanks to Mr Hitchens, people are debating morality, the soul, the afterlife, the origin of the universe, whether religion has served any useful evolutionary purpose. And those people arent just the easy target "Christians". New Atheism sticks its nose into the private lives of all theists and attacks supernatural "beliefs" ranging from Feng Shui to Wicca. From New Age Crystals to religious vegetarianism. From Chi Gung to Aboriginal Dreamtime sacred sites.

That is a pretty BIG hornets nest and not very many people like being told they are deluded. Especially when the secular, scientific enlightenment being offered as a replacement by atheists includes such "woo" as uncertainty principles and goldilocks enigmas and parallel universes and worm holes and quantum weirdness and holographic universes.

If you "can't be bothered" or you think Genesis is an irrelevant fairy tale, why dont you pack up and we can all go home.

Maybe Dawkins is really a theist and he is engaging in a diabolical plot to spread the Word of God by attacking it. Makes lots of sense to me (but I'm drunk at the moment).
