Funeral of a 9 yr old.

Post by The Dawktor » Tue Mar 24, 2009 8:18 pm

Today was shit!
My partner's 2nd best mate's 9 yr old daughter died after a brief illness. Today was the funeral. I never met the girl herself! I was there to support my Partner and her daughter (a very close friend of the deceased). I had to watch impotently as two people I love deeply broke their hearts with grief. :(

I was rather confused by the Church- I couldn't work out if it was Protestant or Catholic- there were statues of Mary & child everywhere- the vicar described himself as a Father, He wore a cassock and a hat. There was NO Latin though! I came to the conclusion that it was a 'High' C of E but I might be totally wrong???

During his sermon the vicar came up with 6 logical fallacies- mostly appeals to antiquity and popularity! Lots of "Believe me when I say..." and many "Trust me..." he also did a "I could lecture you in theology to prove that her death was nothing to do with god but I won't" and he also appealed to the grieving congregation not to turn to Spiritualism - saying "It is drivel" - Kettle, pots and black sprang to mind.

The vicar clocked me NOT singing and clearly staring disbelievingly at him through the ceremony and sought me out after the pink coffin was lowered into the ground- "where are you from?" was his opening gambit but I kept my disbelief in check and made polite noises.

What a shit day!

Sometimes, just sometimes, in such circumstances I go along with the old adage "whatever gets you through it..."

:( Sorry to hear about your awful time, as well as the death of a child... it's hard to bite one's tongue at times, but I think most people recognise that there are times when one just has to... :console:

A sad day for all but the path of discretion wisely chosen, methinks.

That sucks Dawktor. I hate having to swallow the woo at religious funerals but I treat clergy as fair game when it comes to having a dig even under those circumstances. Pulling the twat over his dismissal of spiritualism would be completely justified - just as long as it was away from the grieving relatives - "can I have a quiet word with you in private?" is a good opener.

I am so glad that the funeral I am going to next Monday is secular.

That really sucks, Dawktor. :(

Sounds Catholic, though. They rarely use Latin any more. I think the only real way to tell (without asking) is when they recite the creed: if they don't mention the pope, they aren't catholic.

That's fucked up and my sympathies to all concerned. :console:

Had something similar at my grandfather's funeral... the vic got everyone's name wrong including that of my actual grandfather then just started burbling about rewards in heaven. I know a few of us were already pissed off by the name screw-up and just thought, you can't even get a name correct, you haven't earned the right to superimpose your bullshit on this!? Sickening.
