All Things Canada Eh

Post by Brian Peacock » Mon Mar 10, 2025 8:48 am

Former central banker is truly a man of the people...

Canada's next PM Mark Carney vows to win trade war with Trump
[video]

Summary
  • Canada's next prime minister, Mark Carney, vows to win the trade war against US President Donald Trump, after winning the race to succeed Justin Trudeau
  • "Americans should make no mistake: in trade, as in hockey, Canada will win," the ex-Bank of England governor tells supporters
  • Carney, who will be sworn in as PM in the coming days, pledges retaliatory tariffs on US goods until "Americans show us respect"
  • The 59-year-old, who has never held elected office, easily won the leadership race with 86% of the vote
  • Carney is likely to announce a speedy general election, and although the gap is narrowing with the Conservative opposition, the polls show them still in the lead

Cabinet ministers do not need to be elected MPs/
It's happened before with an unelected PM.
The British Parliamentary system does not directly elect a PM.
The party in power chooses.

That guy seems almost TOO qualified.... and maybe qualified for things that are best left under the authority of a PM, not as part of his background. Anyway, there's no winning a trade war that starts with the kind of stupid trade taxes rump slapped on products from the rest of the world, and that got answered to in kind, especially when the guy on the facing seat is the kind that doubles down rather than knowing when he's been doing stupid stuff.

I have not been to Canada since sometime around 2010. Now we are just changing planes. Our Europe trip is with Air Canada. I once flew Air Canada where the flight attendant spoke all the safety stuff in French and then started on her speech in English. And never finished it. I flew to YYZ once.

same in Toronto. The Brazil one is cool in that the fans sing the "song." It has no lyrics.

Well, I think he said he can 'equalize climate change', or some such. Surely that means he's a good guy. Just like Al Gore, Greta and Kier Starmer.

Once we do that, China will make more climate change though, so we'll have to pay again. Then India will make a bunch of climate change, but I think the UK will be paying for that one.

Steady Tiger - it was tongue in cheek. But still, he's now going to be the leader of a major and ruling (for now) party. If he's not a 'man of the people' then what is he a man of? Elite internationalists?

Carney? Dunno...he's not an elected official. More like the kinds that the EU, UK and such. Installed without voting.

They tried it in the US as well, but it didn't work as smoothly as it has in Britain, Romania and other places which protect 'Our Democracy'

Carney : Yes he's an elite internationalist which is exactly what Canada needs. You doling out compliments now or succumbing to mob rule ideology.?

...

Carney is not elected yet nor does he need to be to be PM.

Certainly different to Australia. There is no way a PM could come from outside the ranks of MPs...

The Liberals' prospects against the Conservatives weren't looking great but since Trudeau's resignation that's changed. The idiotic blithering from the US president is only helping Carney.

There is that but also there was/is a lot of anti-Trudeau sentiment for poor reasons since Canada came through covid rather well. Second in growth in the G7, low inflation at 2%
Growth in final domestic demand has been solid and is estimated to have climbed to about 3.5% in the fourth quarter. This recent strength reflects continued robust growth in consumer spending and a pickup in residential investment. In contrast, business investment remains weak.
https://www.bankofcanada.ca/publication ... st%20rates.
The mob does not like the idea of a carbon tax....that was one of the driving forces behind discontent with Trudeau gov.

Carney was a real score and from his speech he will handle politics easily.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/mark-c ... -1.7479282

He had the partisan crowd and was smooth and done without notes and apparently without teleprompter tho he does use one.
He said if anyone caught Carney's surprise appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart earlier in the week, they saw "his sense of humour, his wit" and think he "can do a lot for our country."

"I think he's as comfortable sitting talking to you and I as he is talking with King Charles," Hecker told CBC News. "He's really that genuine and that down to earth."
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/behind ... -1.7435321

He's not intimidated ...used to presenting before movers and shakers in the financial world.
OTTAWA—Mark Carney represents a lot of the things President Trump and his supporters dislike. He is a card-carrying member of the global technocratic elite, and he has led not one but two central banks—Britain’s and Canada’s. He is a regular at Davos, where the World Economic Forum meets, and has been heavily involved in tackling climate change.
https://www.wsj.com/world/americas/cana ... s-14cc76e5
Perhaps his best qualification ...the dumpf doesn't like his policies or his elitism as the dumpf is laughed at by that group.....an accurate response.

It's Canada.

He can blah blah about what ever eh, and no one cares. Unless he wants to be Governor.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.
