Tesla board approved a $45bn pay package for Elon.
“I just want to start off by saying, hot damn, I love you guys!” a gleeful Musk said as he appeared on stage following the vote.
That's about 750,000 times the average US wage.

Aye, just a fair reward for excellence, and the simple fact is Musk is just 750,000 times more excellent than the average US worker.

Last I heard their sales were tanking. Chinese EVs are on the rise.

Yep. Without the US's 100% tariff on Chinese EVs Tesla would be dead.

Why did I guess it would be that way? How is a business that is barely profitable able to make such ludicrous expenses for a CEO that isn't actually giving them the profit margin to afford the package?

He already tried to get that bonus last year. But a court denied it and said it was excessive. A shareholder vote was required for that reason. The Tesla shareholders are mostly stupid musk fans.

they have to be, I'd not bet on that share being worth much, or rising in value anytime soon, if ever.

There's always someone around to lend you a bit for that kind of thing. The company gets the debt and the CEO and board get the remuneration they believe they fully deserve.
