Europe a bit clueless. DeSantis will defund Ukraine help.
Despite this palpable Russian decline, Europe is not welcoming in an era of greater security. Calls for greater defense spending are louder, and heeded, even if they come at a time when Russia, for decades the defining issue of European security, is revealing itself to be less threatening.

Europe is realizing it cannot depend on the United States – and its wild swings between political poles – solely for its security.

So, how does the West deal with a Russia that has experienced this colossal loss of face in Ukraine and is slowly withering economically because of sanctions? Is a weak Russia something to fear, or just weak? This is the known unknown the West must wrestle with. But it is no longer such a terrifying question.

For over 70 years, the Russians and West held the world in the grip of mutually assured destruction. It was a peace based on fear. But fear of Moscow should be ebbing slowly, and with that comes the risk of miscalculation. It also raises a less chilling prospect: that Russia – like many autocracies before it – may be fading, undermined by its own clumsy dependence on fear domestically.

NATO pushing along.
In total, about 270 US soldiers will participate in the winter training organized by the Jääkäri Brigade, which will start on Monday and last until March 7.

According to the Defense Forces, the goal of the joint exercise is to develop tactical compatibility with the US ground forces in the demanding conditions of northern Finland.

The training is attended by personnel and conscripts of the readiness unit from the Jaeger Brigade, as well as light infantry and parts of the battalion headquarters from the United States Ground Forces.

The Chief of Staff of the Jaeger Brigade, Lieutenant Colonel Jussi Annala , says that it is a continuation from last summer, when the American company trained in Sodankylä for two months.

The Jaeger Brigade is the northernmost unit of the Defense Forces operating in Sodankylä and Rovaniemi. It specializes in arctic training.

According to Jussi Annala, the US troops hope to learn from Finland how to operate in the winter conditions currently prevailing in Lapland.

- Starting from how you move: do you ski, do you ski tow, do you use snowmobiles and so on, Annala says.

The training goes through the maintenance of personal and group functioning capacity, starting with what to eat, what to drink and how to stay.

- There are tents or snow huts in use, says Annala.

Fighting techniques are examined on an individual, group and team level.

Hey Roger, they are no longer commies! No need to help them.
Ukraine denounces Roger Waters as ‘another brick in the wall’ of Moscow propaganda
Kyiv outraged as Pink Floyd star accepts Russian invitation to speak at UN security council and calls for immediate ceasefire

The Russian delegation’s invitation followed an interview Waters had given to the Berliner Zeitung in which he had been highly complimentary towards Vladimir Putin, who he said, according to a translation on his own website, “governs carefully, making decisions on the grounds of a consensus in the Russian Federation government.”

In that 4 February interview, Waters held the west and Ukraine largely responsible for the Russian invasion. However, Waters did not stick to the same line in his security council remarks, blaming Russia and the west for the war.

Quote: "Russia has also begun arming up and digging in for a coming offensive. The Ukrainian military estimates that Russia already has 1,800 tanks, 3,950 armoured vehicles, 2,700 artillery systems, 810 Soviet-era multiple-rocket-launch systems such as Grad and Smerch, 400 fighter jets, and 300 helicopters ready for a new wave of attacks."

Details: Ukrainian officials estimate that Russian forces inside the country have surpassed the 300,000 mark.

Estimates of Russia’s presence in Ukraine are significantly higher than the invading force that Russian President Vladimir Putin used to invade the country last February.

Was Putin fearing his power eroding? War was necessary?
Many of the activist groups and rights organizations that have sprung up in the first 30 years of post-Soviet Russia have met an abrupt end, while nationalist groups once seen as fringe have taken center stage.

As Friday’s anniversary of the invasion approaches, Russia’s military has suffered setback after setback, falling far short of its goal of taking control of Ukraine. But at home, facing little resistance, Putin’s year of war has allowed him to go further than many thought possible in reshaping Russia in his image.

“Liberalism in Russia is dead forever, thank God,” Konstantin Malofeyev, an ultraconservative business tycoon, bragged in a phone interview on Saturday. “The longer this war lasts, the more Russian society is cleansing itself from liberalism and the Western poison.”

If, as some sources suggest, he has a terminal illness, he may well think like that. But the generals know that they and their families will die in the inevitable return fire, so Putin may have an accident the moment he orders such a strike...
