1965: Congress passes Voting Rights Act.
2013: Voting Rights Act is gutted by conservative SCOTUS.
2013 onward: Red states go on epic voter suppression spree referred to by many as "Jim Crow 2.0".
2019: Democratically controlled House passes new voting rights act. Only ONE Republican vote in favor. Bill moves on to the Republican controlled Senate where hideous demon turtle Mitch McConnell sinisterly cackles as he knocks bill into the waste bin because for some insane reason, there's no rule that says the Senate majority leader has to bring a bill to the floor for a vote.

You see? Just another example of both sides being the same. :prof:

Yeah, that guy McConnell has a great Republican sense of humor. Don't know if this has been posted already:

'McConnell Laughs As Opponent Calls Out Senate’s Failure To Give Americans COVID-19 Relief'
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who has blocked coronavirus relief legislation in the Senate for 151 days, outright laughed when his Senate opponent brought it up during a debate Monday night. As the Senate has stalled on passing relief, millions of Americans have remained unemployed and more than 215,000 Americans have died of COVID-19.

Scalia's disingenuous bullshit question 'Why just in these states?' has an obvious answer. 'These states' have historically engaged in long-standing egregious vote suppression tactics. The reason this case is being argued is because one of 'these states' is expressing its wish to be able to institute changes to voting without any oversight. Seeing as the oversight was put in place to protect US citizens from being disenfranchised by 'these states,' the clear implication is that 'these states' would like to once again selectively suppress the vote.

The video didn't give the lawyer's full answer to Scalia's question but his immediate obsequious response didn't bode well, and I doubt he said anything like the above. Perhaps he didn't think the blatant (and true) accusation that the plaintiff making the appeal was doing so in bad faith would sway any conservative justices.

Even if he did make that point, we know that it didn't carry weight with the conservatives.

'Fuck your feelings' is all very well, but 'fuck your rights' is where it's really at.
