Said Peter...what you're requesting just isn't my bag
Said Daemon, who's sorry too, but y'see we didn't have no choice
And our hands they are many and we'd be of one voice
We've come all the way from Wigan to get up and state
Our case for survival before it's too late

Italian study may have more real world meaning than Pfizer Lancet numbers:
Comparing the period in which the Alpha variant was prevalent with that in which the Delta variant was, efficacy against infection fell from 84.8% to 67.1%, while protection against hospitalisation declined much less, from 91.7% to 88.7%.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
The mysteries of viruses. Mechanism/biology/biochemistry/mutation etc. still to be explained.
The main determinants of Covid’s spread (other than vaccines, which are extremely effective) remain mysterious. Some activities that seem dangerous, like in-person school or crowded outdoor gatherings, may not always be. As unsatisfying as it is, we do not know why cases have recently plunged. The decline is consistent with the fact that Covid surges often last for about two months before receding, but that’s merely a description of the data, not a causal explanation.
In coming weeks and months, it is possible that the virus will surge again, maybe because of a new variant or because vaccine immunity will wane. It is also possible that the population has built up enough immunity — from both vaccines and previous infections — that Delta will have been the last major wave.
When caseloads are high, it makes sense to take precautions, even if we can’t be sure how much they matter. When caseloads are lower, it makes sense to take fewer, because almost every precaution has a cost. Other than that, the best we can do is get vaccinated and, as Osterholm says, stay humble.(Michael Osterholm, an epidemiologist at the University of Minnesot)

Always check your sources:
By their calculations, the risk of myocarditis was 1 in 1,000 or 0.1%.
However, the numbers used by the study were wrong. The authors largely underestimated the amount of vaccines delivered, giving a number 25 times smaller than the actual amount.
They initially said that the number of vaccines delivered was 32,379 - when it was actually 854,930.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
The Merck pill fails to impress me. It has to be taken early in the disease. If it then cured all, that would be fine, but it just reduces disease and then hospitalizations by 50%. Not exactly the magic pill to sell to stock holders of Merck.

Merck drug trial was stopped "because it worked so well." Placebo patients changed to real drug.
CNN
Data from the trial has not yet been peer-reviewed or published.
"Merck has been producing molnupiravir at risk and expects to produce 10 million courses of treatment by the end of 2021, with more courses expected to be produced in 2022," the company said.

UK ministers face questions over firm linked to suspected Covid test errors
Of course Chumocracy was involved.Immensa’s sister company already being investigated and a related US firm sent out used DNA test kits
Ministers are facing questions about the Covid testing company linked to suspected wrong PCR results, as it emerged its sister company in the UK is being investigated over travel testing failures and a related US firm sent out used DNA test kits filled with other customers’ saliva.
Immensa Health Clinic is under scrutiny after the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) found at least 43,000 people may have been wrongly given a negative Covid test result, leading to the suspension of operations at its privately run laboratory in Wolverhampton.
It followed an investigation into reports of people receiving negative PCR test results after previously testing positive on a lateral flow device, many of them in the south-west and Wales.
Immensa was founded in May 2020 by Andrea Riposati, a former management consultant and owner of a DNA testing company, just three months before it was awarded a £119m PCR testing contract by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). He is the sole listed owner and board director.
Riposati is also the founder of Dante Labs, which is under investigation in the UK by the Competition and Markets Authority over its PCR travel tests.
