I wonder how many of those new cases are people who have been vaccinated? Your death rate seems lower, so perhaps many of your new cases will not have severe health problems, though of course they will still be infectious, and potentially contribute to another wave if other measures such as mask wearing are ignored...

Nearly all COVID-19 deaths in the US now are in people who weren't vaccinated, according to analysis by the Associated Press.

It is a demonstration of how effective the shots have been and an indication that deaths per day — now down to less than 300 — could be practically zero if everyone eligible got the vaccine.

The analysis of available government data from May shows that "breakthrough" infections in fully vaccinated people accounted for fewer than 1,200 of more than 853,000 COVID-19 hospitalisations. That's about 0.1 per cent.

And only about 150 of the more than 18,000 COVID-19 deaths in May were in fully vaccinated people. That translates to about 0.8 per cent, or five deaths per day on average.

Coronaviruses have sparked some massive disease outbreaks in living memory, but we've actually been battling them for millennia, according to a new study.

In 2002 a coronavirus sparked what became known as the SARS outbreak in China, infecting over 8,000 people and killing more than 800 – SARS stands for "severe acute respiratory syndrome".

Four years later came the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus outbreak that resulted in more than 2,400 cases and over 850 deaths.

And currently, we're dealing with multiple strains of SARS-CoV-2 — the virus that causes COVID-19.

Now, a team of Australian and US scientists has discovered that a coronavirus epidemic broke out in East Asia around 25,000 years ago and lasted 20,000 years.

According to their study, reported today in Current Biology, evidence of this can be seen in the genomes of modern-day people from the region.

"It wreaked havoc in the population and left significant genetic scars," said study co-author Kirill Alexandrov, a synthetic biologist at the Queensland University of Technology.
