An Indonesian passenger plane carrying 62 people that went missing on Saturday is feared to have crashed, after suspected debris was found in the sea north of Jakarta.

The Boeing 737-500, which departed from Jakarta’s international airport at about 2.36pm, lost contact four minutes later. Data from the flight tracker FlightRadar24 said Sriwijaya Air flight SJ182 had reached an altitude of nearly 11,000ft (3,350 metres) before dropping to 250ft.

The plane was carrying 50 passengers, including seven children, among them three infants, and 12 crew members, according to the transport ministry. It was scheduled to make a 90-minute journey over the Java Sea to Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan province on Borneo island.

Maintenance does not seem to have a high priority in Indonesia.

Boeing 737 Max could fly in Europe this summer after EU approval

The Boeing 737 Max could return to European skies by summer once approval for the plane to fly again is granted in the EU next week.

It would mark a critical step in its return to service, after the 737 Max was grounded worldwide following crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia caused by a faulty sensor, which repeatedly triggered a system that pushed the nose down. A total of 346 people died in the two accidents.

Patrick Ky, the executive director of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, said on Tuesday it would publish an updated airworthiness directive next week, following in the footsteps of regulators in the US and Brazil.

The 737 Max will be able to return to service as soon as Boeing has updated software and rewired some components, and airlines have trained their pilots in the changes. Ky said the version of the 737 Max bought by Irish airline Ryanair will be certified “in the coming weeks”, meaning it will probably be ready for service by summer.

The whole thing was driven by cheapness. The airlines thought they could substitute the Max for older 737s and not retrain pilots because "it flies the same." It would have been cheaper (for construction) for Boeing to start from scratch and build an all new plane, which would have required all that pilot training.

All the 737s now ancient. Fixed 737Max may be as safe as old models. But scrap them all in 10 years.

Max Ward died recently. He's a guy who made a airline, and made a movie about trying to deregulate air travel in Canada, back in the day.



His old hangar was taken over by 'Buffalo' Joe, who runs Buffalo air out of it. It's a cool place to wander around.

This one is somehow connected to Iron Maiden, (musical ensemble from the 80's) and is an official plane of theirs, or something. I don't know how far beyond the label it goes though. I DO know that Mikey (Joe's son ) is a GIANT fan, and was probably smiling about this the last time he thought of it.

I imagine all the aging fuel hogs were quickly retired during covid with only the most fuel efficient like the Dreamliner on the few remaining routes. Enjoyed the flight from LA to Auckland last month ...the 787s are warmer at cruising altitude and of course neat electronic windows.
