Boris Johnson referred to police watchdog over potential misconduct

Boris Johnson has been formally referred for potential investigation into whether he committed the criminal offence of misconduct in public office, over allegations about a conflict of interest with a US businesswoman while he was mayor of London.

An official from the Greater London Authority, the city’s devolved government, has written to the prime minister noting claims he had “on more than one occasion used your position as mayor to benefit and reward” Jennifer Arcuri, a tech entrepreneur.

“Subject to any explanation provided by you, these matters give rise to a suggestion that there has been a failure to safeguard the public purse and if so that amounts to a significant breach of public trust,” said the letter, from the office of the authority’s monitoring officer. “These are the ingredients of the offence of misconduct in a public office.”...

Johnson ‘whipping up riot fears to avoid Brexit extension’

Boris Johnson is whipping up fears of rioting and deaths on the streets if Brexit is not delivered by 31 October so that he can try to invoke emergency powers and avoid extending the UK’s EU membership beyond that date, Labour’s Brexit spokesman, Keir Starmer, claimed on Saturday.

After a week in which the prime minister was accused by MPs from all the main parties, including senior Tories, of inciting violence by accusing Remainers of Brexit “surrender” and “betrayal”, Starmer said it was part of an orchestrated plan to stoke a sense of outrage among Leave voters and create civil unrest, so an extension might be avoided.

Increasingly MPs across the House of Commons believe Downing Street is considering using the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, which grants special powers in the event of a national emergency, as a way to override the so-called Benn act, which mandates the prime minister to seek a delay to Brexit if no deal has been struck with Brussels by 19 October...

The EU have stated quite clearly that they will listen to his new ideas.
He has nothing except to offer May's deal with the word "backstop" crossed out and "Boris' bonzer new cunning plan, details to follow after we leave" in its place.

- Although it is worth noticing that where May's deal embedded a binding agreement to regulatory alignment on workers rights, environmental protections, and trading standards in the legal agreement, Boris' has shifted those into the non-binding political declaration. There can only be one reason for that.

Ultimately Boris' deal has the same problems as May's. Who is going to vote for it - will he have the numbers?

Unless he manages to conquer the tory rebels back, and some labourites to boot, I strongly doubt so.

The ERG say they're going to vote for it. Some are suggesting that IF the deal gets through Parliament then the so-called Benn law which binds the gov to asking for an extension goes away, Brexit goes ahead, Boris throwns the DUP to the wolves and starts the process of NI and Scotland leaving the Union - with Wales perhaps becoming more independently minded t'boot (and the Yorkshire and Cornish separatist movements get a shot in the arm), and the super rich continue to hide more of their earnings and dodge more of their tax off shore.
