Local elections have become far less important as the local councils we are voting on have become increasingly de-politised and much more about providing basic services at the best price. Even so they are a barometer of how the country is feeling and the credibility or otherwise of the current parties. Both main parties have taken a massive hit. The Lib Dem’s and the Greens have made big gains.

I’m very pleased to see UPIK have so far lost 17 council seats. Fuckers.

UPIK?

The Tories lost 1200 councillors and Mrs May says that this is a sign that the country want MPs to back her deal. Really, the lady is barking.

She does seem to have an extraordinary capacity for self delusion. I suppose in some circumstances that could actually be a useful quality for a politician.

One small slightly cheering sideline concerning the dreadful lot that are the DUP in Northern Ireland:

. DUP candidate makes history
The Democratic Unionist Party's first openly gay election candidate has been elected.
Alison Bennington hugged supporters at a Belfast count centre for Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.
She attracted 1,053 votes as part of her campaign for the pro-union and Christian party, and praised her supporters' "good, hard work and good teamwork".
The DUP's founder, the late Rev Ian Paisley, once led a campaign to, in his words, "Save Ulster from Sodomy" and prevent the decriminalisation of homosexuality.

People, particularly those of his political ilk also used to stand erect and to attention upon his exit.

I think what we're basically saying here is that the Rev Ian Paisley was a massive dick.

With a small but vociferous...er...following.

Meanwhile the inevitable call for May to resign. In the absence of anyone with the balls to make a few big decisions it seems as unlikely as ever..
