737Max was a stop gap measure to please American and have a plane priced to compete with airbus.

it was to be the end of the 737 line in 10 years. Now sooner.

Said Peter...what you're requesting just isn't my bag
Said Daemon, who's sorry too, but y'see we didn't have no choice
And our hands they are many and we'd be of one voice
We've come all the way from Wigan to get up and state
Our case for survival before it's too late
Turn stone to bread, said Daemon Duncetan
Turn stone to bread right away...

On and on it goes:
Boeing to inspect 737 Max planes after finding debris in fuel tanks – business live

It wont go away.
Boeing's 'culture of concealment' led to fatal 737 Max crashes, report finds
Boeing's 'culture of concealment' led to fatal 737 Max crashes, report finds
Preliminary findings conclude Boeing ‘jeopardized the safety of the flying public’ in its attempts to get Max approved by regulators
A “culture of concealment”, cost cutting and “grossly insufficient” oversight led to two fatal crashes of Boeing 737 Max aircraft that claimed 346 lives, a congressional report has concluded.

The world's thirst for travel, despite the virus, forces airlines to buy them, once the training wheels are back on. It would turn out better if Boeing just sold them to domestic airlines as the brand winds down. Just abandon the rest of the world to Air Bus for that size plane.
If Boeing bungles the next 700 then they are really in trouble. Even if in the "too big to fail" category.
The test I guess is the new version of 777.

Bad wiring:
Boeing has long contended the bundles have not created any safety issues and the same placement of the wiring in previous generations of the 737 has resulted in no issues after more than 200 million hours of flight. Still, technical staff with the FAA and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency have raised questions about the potential for the wiring bundles to short-circuit.
The concern is a short circuit in particular wiring bundles in the Max could, in certain situations, lead to pilots losing control of the plane.

Waiting for paint and plaster to dry.
Meanwhile:
The Max has been grounded since March 2019, after some badly written software caused two crashes that killed 346 people. And while Boeing has received plenty of scrutiny for its bad code, it’s the Max’s computing power — or lack thereof — that has kept it on the ground since then.
Old and slow isn’t always worse: the 737 Next Generation series is the safest narrow-body airplane ever made, in part due to these reliable, if unspectacular, computers. To keep costs down, Boeing wanted to reuse them in the next iteration of the 737 as well. The Max might still be flying today if those computers simply had to perform the same tasks that they had for almost 30 years.
