Yep, he did. The reason he did that, though, is that he saw it as helping the Union survive intact. From a letter Lincoln wrote to Horace Greeley in August 1862:

It's the same desire that gets a few Catholic kids from Kentucky defamed in the media.

It's the same desire that results in "mattress girl" and Rolling Stone's "A Rape on Campus."

It's the same desire that results in knee-jerk acceptance of Jussie Smollett's bullshit.

It's a dream. It's a wish. It's giddy glee at the narrative being confirmed.

It's "we know that this is 'America in 2019...'" - America, 2019 -- a country rife with "systemic" and "systematic" racism -- where lynchings are common -- where cis-het white men "have it easy" and the rest are "oppressed" by the patriarchy. There really are gangs of "maga hat wearing racists" lurking the streets of Chicago and every other major city with bleach and nooses, ready to string up the first gay black man that can be located. This is America, 2019.

So, your theory is that violence against Trump supporters is so common as to have become something of a banality. And, racial violence in the US receives such intense coverage across the panoply of major media precisely because it's so rare it's surprising?
