To bring Roman Britain right up into one's face I can think of nothing better that Vindolanda - about 20 minutes away. I've visited three or four times and get something new from it each time.

Not much to see either. The Border families were worse than the Highlanders.

Yeah, they nicked the stone to build their hovels - no respect for Britain's noble historical past. All that will change come Brexit-day! As for the calories in sausage - well, you can eat as many as you like as long as you don't swallow.

What a horrible website. Those Romans were famously shit at web design. I visited the catacombs in Rome many years ago - don't remember much about it as I was in love and passed most of my time in a state of rampant inebriation.Rum wrote: ↑Sun Jan 13, 2019 11:24 amTo bring Roman Britain right up into one's face I can think of nothing better that Vindolanda - about 20 minutes away. I agree about the web site. It is crap and it doesn’t do justice to the centre at all. The boggy land in those parts preserved all sorts of mundane stuff. There’s even a letter from a mum to another thanking her for an invitation to a child’s birthday party. Brings every day Roman life very much to life.Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Sun Jan 13, 2019 12:04 pmWhat a horrible website. Those Romans were famously shit at web design. They can be very effective at keeping people in. See The Siege of Münster and the Siege of Jerusalem.
