Re: BREXIT! BREXIT! BREXIT!
Sounds legally problematic to allow those under the age of majority and non-citizens vote in a binding referendum.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Re: BREXIT! BREXIT! BREXIT!
Especially in a country who has no idea who lives there.
It is a nice dream Brian but the UK does not have the infrastructure to handle it. I also think time would be a problem as all those registering to vote would have to have at least basic processing. A legally binding referendum would be challenged in the courts as it is not part of the UK's decision making system as Parliament always has the last say. To be honest it would be a minefield.

Re: BREXIT! BREXIT! BREXIT!
Oh do fuck off with that all-too-easy cynical, contrarian claptrap. It's not a dream, it's just an idea. I think securing the widest possible canvas of support among everyone who has a stake in the decision for Remain or May's deal is not an unreasonable suggestion about breaching our current impasse - even putting aside the idea of 16 year-old and EU nationals with indefinite leave to remain (predominantly married). A compulsory referendum would certainly put the 'will of the people' beyond doubt. If you basically think it's a good idea in principle perhaps you could offer some positive suggestions that might contribute to making it work.

There should be 4 options:Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Sun Sep 08, 2019 10:51 am
A legally binding referendum would mean that the result would be enacted in law automatically on the final count - regardless of the outcome. At this point I think a majority of MPs would probably vote for this and it would mean that each political party could advocate the principle while setting their own agenda as far as which option they preferred and what they would do following the result one way or another.
Remain
No Deal
Deal Brexit
Dont know/Don't care
First past the post wins, as this is the UK tradition.

Re: BREXIT! BREXIT! BREXIT!
Having a 'none of the above' option seems sensible in a compulsory ballot, but having Deal vs No Deal vs Remain is liable to split the Brexit vote and unduly favour Remain - that wouldn't really settle anything as far as the national debate goes, and people voting Brexit in either form would probably feel hard done to if Remain won, with some justification.
As Rum said up the page, it's the relentless uncertainty and the mounting boredom of this business which is fuddling our brains. Like a man with a relentless toothache who agrees to have a leg chopped off because he's been told it'll help, the nation is becoming so frustrated by the issue and the process that an extreme and damaging outcome - a no-deal Brexit, that nobody was talking about during the campaigns - seems like a good idea.
And if we're going to have a bacon option then surely we have a rational obligation to cheese as well.

I don’t think he is particularly. But the only deal on offer includes the UK leaving NI in the single market at least temporarily in order to avoid a hard Irish border. That is the red line for the hard liners.

All his money is in tax havens, his unenlightened self interest is to have as massive a cleft between UK an EU as possible so he can then negociate advantageous 'trade deals' with other nations.
