Re: How much trouble
I feel ya, my biggest worry about leaving is my two grown kids. Boat is one thing, but Africa is a different kettle of missionary.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

What's with all the histrionics on the liberal side? Are you all serious? The sky is not falling.

Re: How much trouble
Sure it is. All three branches of government are fundie conservatives, and this is the important bit, despite not representing the people. Many of our grassroots movements, the ordinary guy, he's fighting for Trump and sees liberals and their wicked socialism, and science as the greatest threats.
We have no labor movement and with no hope of bringing manufacturing home we never will.
Our immigrant population, while traditionally thought to support lefties, is very religious and susceptible to the evangelical movement.
Our military and police are conservative in God we trust morons...

Re: How much trouble
Gibbon famously described the fall of the Ronan Empire as resulting from a lack of civic virtue in the face of barbarism. The Roman political establishment became progressively decadent; self-obsessed and overly focused on securing and maintaing its own status, wealth, and influence even as the hordes were banging at the gates. When a democratic political system turns to servicing the interests of its operators to the exclusion of the citizenry it's days are clearly numbered. Perhaps this has already happened and the democratic golden age has passed us by -- perhaps it never even truly arrived -- but if we want to save democracy we have to rekindle general enthusiasm for the idea of politics as being a civic duty rather than a means of personal enrichment, and it wouldn't hurt if we elected people who less dogmatically certain and more focused on administrative competence.

See that tiny little bit of green on the tip of 'Murika's Meatmuscle there? That's where I want to be, but there's sweet fuck all there. Like not even any towns. Shitton of uninhabited islands, though. Looks like good smuggling terrain. Come in out of the Gulf, unload to a bunch of jon boats.
