Then there's the recent news about the massive number (over 1000) of children abused by American priests in Pennsylvania, all covered up by bishops. Hopefully, they'll be deserting the church in droves...

I was very briefly in the mists of time a born again believer, so nobody specific in a leadership position to hate - just a bunch of self deluded loonies.

must admit that born agains are quite the number... self delusion, hubris, self righteousness, bad case of cherry picking (and tend to forget the bit about the camel and the needlehole when they happen to be wealthy)... can't stand them.

Back in my time the term 'born again' hadn't been coined. We were, if memory serves, 'evangelical' Christians.

Of course I was only 16 so I had no clue what the fuck was going on.

I don't know if 'born again' is a branch of 'evangelicals', or if it's a synonym, I haven't studied the matter closely enoughg... I treat any self designated 'christian' subscribing to the wealth theology as a heretic, schismatic, and beyond the pale bastard in need of being burned at the stake.

My take on it is as follows: As evangelicals we were required at some point to 'give our hearts to Jesus' - i.e. make a major commitment. If you did, this wonderful experience would happen (apparently). In the case of me and some friends were were on a Crusaders (a Xian youth movement) camp on some outlying islands in Hong Kong, at the mercy of our deranged 'leaders' who spent several days leading up to the moment in the tent when we were to do the deed.

It was very emotional, there was a great deal of peer pressure, not to mention the authority of the 'leaders'. I (rather half heartedly) did as was required. The point at which one 'gives one's heart to Jesus' is I think the moment of being 'born again' as it became known.

My rather lacklustre 'spiritual experience' faded when a few months later, lucky for me, my family returned to the UK for six months on home leave, where I gathered my senses and rationality together and realised what a ridiculous bag of shite the whole thing had been.

well, there was a time when I wondered if I had the vocation to the priesthood... I read the NT to see how I felt about it, and noticed that it was made up of nonsense built on top of absurdity... never took the pain to go through OT and decided that I could not be a Xian any longer.

I would say 'override' reason. Faith seems to be good at that little trick,

What happened to the other Pope?

What will the world be like after its ruler is removed?
