Trade wars - shooting yourself in the foot.

Post by Rum » Mon Jun 25, 2018 6:29 pm

Our Donald, as anyone without a degree in economics, could have told him, is shooting himself in the foot. Harley Davidson is avoiding the price of an average bike going up by 2K because of steel import tariffs (and reciprocal ones on bikes amongst other things) by moving more of its production abroad - and of course shedding USA based jobs in the process. :fp:

Harley-Davidson to shift some bike production outside US
45 minutes ago

Harley-Davidson plans to shift some motorcycle production away from the US to avoid the "substantial" burden of European Union tariffs.

Last week, the EU imposed retaliatory tariffs on US goods, including bourbon, orange juice and motorcycles.

The measures are a response to new US duties on steel and aluminium imports.

Wisconsin-based Harley-Davidson said the increased cost from the tariffs threaten its international sales, which it has been trying to expand.

The company has assembly plants in Australia, Brazil, India and Thailand as well as in the US.

It said it would raise investment in its international plants, though it did not say which ones.

"To address the substantial cost of this tariff burden long-term, Harley-Davidson will be implementing a plan to shift production of motorcycles for EU destinations from the US to its international facilities to avoid the tariff burden," the company said.

Harley-Davidson said it expected the ramp-up in production to take nine to 18 months.

The move is one of the most visible consequences of the trade disputes triggered by US President Donald Trump's decision to levy tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.

Mr Trump says the duties are necessary to protect the US steel and aluminium industries, which are vital to national security.

They have drawn retaliation from the EU, Canada, Mexico, India and others while driving up the cost of metals for manufacturers in the US.

America will get the short end of the deal if French wine gets too expensive. I still think the reds can't be bettered - to my limited knowledge anyway.

well... I'll grant that to my mind, a fine bordeaux or burgundy red cannot be beaten... though American varietals can be eminently drinkable, if I judge by the scores they get among the profession (and I hear Oz also makes quite fine wines, but I have no idea about it)...

I could not reallyh care if our wines got to the US or to China instead, they don't go down my throat, which is what I deem matters.

He'll fuck up the economy like Republicans always do. The Democrats will come in and fix it. The Republicans will be voted back in 'cause gays and taxes are evil and stuff. Republicans will take credit for the strong economy.

Rinse/repeat.

Move to South Africa. Really good wine runs you 7 or 8 bucks a bottle.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Between us my brother and I know pretty much everything there is to know about wine. If you want to know something just ask away.
