Said Peter...what you're requesting just isn't my bag
Said Daemon, who's sorry too, but y'see we didn't have no choice
And our hands they are many and we'd be of one voice
We've come all the way from Wigan to get up and state
Our case for survival before it's too late

Nope does not work. Is a Finnish mind required?

I’m essentially bilingual, as much as one can be.

Re: Onion launches own social medium
I think you can be. I grew up speaking English and Cantonese interchangeably. I clearly remember thinking in both languages too as a child.
Sadly the Cantonese has faded now and I would struggle to order using it in a Chinese restaurant these days.

Owing to its innovative organizing and messaging abilities, flourishing social network Onion Social has inspired a wave of successful democratic uprisings in Sudan, North Korea, Syria, and dozens of other oppressed nations. What do you think?

Re: Onion launches own social medium
I am truly bilingual. My thoughts wary the whole time. I will be typing in English and thinking in Dutch.
That is a serious shame Rum. Maybe after settling in your new home you could take it up again. I am thinking about my German and French.

Re: Onion launches own social medium
There's not a lot of point really. I would never use it again. Plus I doubt there are teachers of Cantonese around this neck of the woods - maybe a Mandarin teacher or two - but Cantonese was tends to be looked down on as a 'low' form. It is a pretty crude language but the swear words are wonderful!

I don't know whether I'm truly bilingual, but I sure practice my English daily, and think in English about half the time

Re: Onion launches own social medium
I'll tell you what was a real shame. My school in HK was paid for by my dad's employer (the colonial government). It taught the British curriculum of the time (The Oxford Exam board) and followed lessons in the same way as they would have in the UK. The school was in much demand because of that and about 1/3 of the pupils were kids of local rich Chinese people.
However the casual racism and colonial arrogance of the time - slowly fading though it was - meant that it did not appear to occur to anyone that teaching Mandarin or Cantonese (Mandarin would have been more portable as it is spoken all over China), would have been an excellent idea and opened up opportunities for us kids as well as helping us understand more of the culture.
I think it was a shameful thing to overlook. I took Latin until I was 16 but Chinese was simply not an option. Who needed fucking Latin in 1967??

Re: Onion launches own social medium
You probably are. You dont always realise it. I notice when I am with ex-pats and Dutch at a reception for example. Some ex-pats speak Dutch and plenty of Dutch speak English(?). It is a good mental exercise. I never think just speak and listen.Svartalf wrote:I don't know whether I'm truly bilingual, but I sure practice my English daily, and think in English about half the time
