At what point do we start describing the Catholic Church as a paedophile ring with a side interest in religion?

Instead of it being a tiny minority amongst a whole lot of priests who were basically good chaps, it has become clear all over the world that we are talking about a much, much higher proportion than that, systematically protected by a hierarchy with many pedophiles lurking within...

During my time as a child protection social worker the extent of the issue started to become clear - we are talking the 1980s here. The approach changed over a relatively short time from assuming that child molesters were 'rotten apples' to assuming that certain professions such as youth work, residential care working and even teaching would attract more predators because they offered easy access to kids. It has taken a long time for the same scrutiny to be applied to the priesthood.

It was depressing to become more and more cynical about human behaviour back then. Dealing with it every day one started to see child molesters around every corner. I'm glad I got out of it when I did.

He is now spending his first night in jail.

Pending sentencing in 2 weeks, and pending the inevitable appeal...

6 years in jail, with a 3 year 8 month parole period...

But he is definitely appealing his conviction...

That's a good question, Svarty. He has been in jail for the 2 weeks since the conviction. I'm not sure whether his legal team will seek a release pending appeal or not. Watch this space...

Friends of my wife were in the same country town when he was a young priest. He was regarded as a kiddy fiddler back then...
