45% of Americans hating Obama is not the same as
55% of Americans hating Trump
And whatever the percentages, these voters are in different places.

It used to be that you read about crime and gangs in the US 50 and 60 years ago. Now, not that much. The criminal element went into politics, the mafia split into republicans and democrats. They make the laws so none of them can be severely punished, the rich can afford to pay for protection, and the poor cannot tell the difference between reality and "reality shows". Trump is presently the Godfather, although he is woefully lacking in IQ and manners, having been given his fortune from his father and education by purchase via donation from daddy's riches. Cosa Nostra America. :bored:

Nah, this bothsidesing has got to stop.

Democrats aren't the problem. Boomers aren't the problem. Millennials aren't the problem. Congress isn't the problem. White people aren't the problem. Black people aren't the problem. Men aren't the problem. Women aren't the problem.

Republicans are the problem. The Republican party is no longer just a political party—it is now an insane, corrupt, terricidal, creationist, racist, psychotic, christofascist death cult that has totally lost touch with reality.

I generally try not to see the world in black and white, but at this point in US history I think it has become clear that the Republicans are wearing the black hats, just as in Germany 1930 it was the Nazis who were clearly wearing the black hats. American conservatism has gone rotten to the core and must be stopped before it metastasizes into full-blown fascism.

Here's the lunatic Michele Bachmann (a former congresswoman for whom people actually voted) talking about Trump:
“He has stood up where most Republicans wouldn't dare to stand up,” Bachmann went on to say of Trump. “Donald Trump has had the courage in the fortitude, and I will say to your listeners in my lifetime I have never seen a more biblical president than I have seen in Donald Trump.”

“He has so impressed me with what he's done, and we haven't even talked about Israel,” Bachmann said before adding that she sees Trump as “highly biblical.”

“And I would say to your listeners we will in all likelihood never see a more godly, biblical president again in our lifetimes so we need to be not only praying for him; we need to support him, in my opinion,” she added.

Bachmann has served as a member of Trump’s evangelical advisory board in the past. She also previously hailed Trump's presidential victory in 2016 as “proof positive of what the Lord did.”

They actually want the Rapture. This is utter madness. There is no equivalent to this on the Democratic side. If we keep assigning blame to the wrong people, we will never fix the problem.

It just so turns out that there are boomer, millennial, white, black, male and female Republicans. And Democrats are a problem too. For Crying out loud, how shitty must you be when you can't totally steamroll a candidate of Trump's calibre? Come to think of it, your entire society is the problem. Stop making excuses already.

And how, pray tell, is the Democratic party supposed to appeal to people who think the world is 6000 years old? How is a mostly rational, secular party supposed to lure voters who think abortion is "infanticide"? How is a mostly rational, 1st world party supposed to appeal to people who think Obama is a secret Kenyan Muslim? How is a rational 1st world party supposed to appeal to people who think the solution to gun violence is prayer and more guns? How is a mostly rational political party supposed to attract people who think black people are intrinsically violent and lazy? How is a 1st world party supposed to attract people who think science is evil and climate change is a lie?

You've been reading Coito Two's blatherings for years now—now imagine 63 million others who are as detached from reality as he is, but on top of that also hold insane, evangelical, dominionist, fundamentalist religious beliefs? These people are unreachable!

And how about fascist Germany and Italy—were their entire societies the problem? I don't see things that way. Most Germans and Italians weren't fascists.

You provided the answer to your questions yourself. Or would you somehow attempt to argue that there are no men, women, millennials, boomers, whites, blacks and so forth among the people who think the world is 6000 years old or who think abortion is infanticide, for example? Also, let me reiterate: Just how shitty must the Democrats be when they can't totally steamroll a candidate of Trump's calibre? They've succeeded keeping a neoliberal with nice table manners in the presidency for two terms, then tried to follow this up with offering an utter Wall Street shill and no fucking idea, motivation or clearly expressed plan about how to fight for social improvements to do the same job. And no Democrat bar Michael Moore saw the disaster coming. Really, Seabass, anyone who lays blame solely on Republicans is terminally deluded.

Of course there are, but that's not the point. I keep seeing people blaming white people, or blaming millennials, or blaming boomers—but these are physical traits that have nothing to do with one's politics or worldview. "Republican", on the other hand is a political party that corresponds to certain beliefs and political goals and a certain worldview.

How should Dems pull voters from the Republican party? Be more racist? Be more anti-abortion? Be more dominionist? Be more anti-science?

Remember the vile and reprehensible Roy Moore? The reasonable centrist Democrat Doug Jones—who by the way had a history of putting Klansmen behind bars—barely won the election. He should have won by a landslide, but he only won by a sliver. Was the narrow victory due to Doug Jones' shittyness, or was it simply an indication that there are a shit ton of hardcore knuckle-draggers in Alabama? IMO, Doug Jones isn't the problem—the people who voted for Roy Moore are.

Now show me which one of the 63 million Republican voters is not a boomer, a millennial, black, white, male or female. I tell what the problem is: US society is the problem. FFS, 46.1% of all US citizens who turned up to vote chose Trump. I feel embarrassed enough about my country when the One nation party, led by Pauline Hanson, who is pretty much on the same level of the stark raving mad lunatic scale as Trump got 4.28% of the popular vote in the 2016 federal election. Can't you see that "Republicans" is more of a symptom than a cause of your problems?

Exactly! Every single boomer, a millennial, black, white, male, female or whoever that voted for him.

As for Germans not having been Nazis in the 1930s, I found him:

Image

Admittedly, that's not entirely fair. That photo was taken in 1936, after Hitler had won his dictatorial powers, and after the NSDAP was the only party in parliament and after the GESTAPO made anyone who looked like an opponent disappear. The circled person in that photo was very likely August Langmesser. He spent 15 July 1938 to 19 January 1941 in the Börgermoor concentration camp. Three years after his release he was drafted into a penal battalion and killed in action a few months later.

That said, during the last German elections that could be regarded as reasonably democratic (not even the communists had been banned at that stage) The NSDAP amassed a plurality of votes - 43.91%. Runners-up were the socialists with 18.25% and the communists with 12.32%. In May 1945, by contrast, nobody ever, except for a few generals and some members of the SS was a Nazi.

Dude, "white people" isn't a monolithic bloc of like-minded people with shared views and common goals. "White" is merely a physical trait. So when I see someone blaming white people, or boomers, or what have you, it irks me because they are making sweeping generalizations about a large group of people who don't necessarily have anything in common apart from a physical characteristic.

When someone votes Republican, however, they are making a choice. When someone votes NSDAP they are making a choice. They are making a choice about what kind of society they want to live in.

In the democratic election preceding the Nazi period, something like 20-25% of the German population voted NSDAP, iirc. Are you really comfortable saying that all of German society was the problem? Most Germans didn't vote for the Nazi party. Many couldn't even vote. Many helped Jews hide or escape after the Nazis took power.

I'm getting the notion that you think I'm trying to absolve non-Republican Americans of guilt or something. That's not what I'm doing. I'm just saying that we can't fix a problem if we can't even identify it. All this "both sides" crap drives me nuts.

Indeed. And when 46.1% of the US votes cast choose Trump and 43.9% of the German votes cast choose Hitler you're not making any headway trying to identify the problem by saying "Republicans" and "Nazis" respectively.

Seabass makes a good point that casting aspersions of large groups, based on race, geography, age etc. is fairly pointless. Actions, such as voting for a particular party, belonging to a political group or clearly stating certain opinions are at least a better guide for making generalisations.
