Yeah, the parties were more ideologically diverse back then, but my point is these things can change over time. I know some people think Texas is turning purple. I don't know about that, but from what I've seen, it's not a typical southern state.

Same in Florida. First Republican governor since Reconstruction was Claude Kirk in 1966. We were pretty much constant Democrat till Jeb Bush, it's been GOP since then.
