I listened to the recording and read the transcript. Here is the latter:Tyrannical wrote: ↑Tue Jun 02, 2020 5:22 amTo get a better sense of the story... you'd have to ask her dead mum why she called the Larry King Show in '93Tero wrote: ↑Tue Jun 02, 2020 1:35 amNYT on Tara Reid
To get a better sense of the story — and Reade’s allegation against Biden — The Times has interviewed nearly 100 of her friends, relatives, co-workers and neighbors, as well as reviewed court records. That reporting shows how Reade’s pluck and smarts helped her overcome an abusive childhood to find opportunities in acting, politics and law. It also shows that she has a tendency to embellish and has left several former friends feeling disappointed or duped.
Jim Rutenberg, Stephanie Saul and Lisa Lerer offer much more detail in an article that runs more than 5,000 words.
Let's accept that the anonymous caller was Tara Reade's mother and the unnamed Senator was Joe Biden. What can we make of the call itself? Tara "could not get through with her problems at all, and the only thing she could have done was go to the press, and she chose not to do it out of respect for him". So, unspecified problems led to no disclosure via the press out of respect for the Senator. More than a quarter century later, April 2019, Reade's respect for Biden had evaporated and those unspecified problems had suddenly morphed into Biden touching her neck and shoulders in ways that made her feel uncomfortable. A few months later that respect must have evaporated some more, for the allegations morphed again, this time into accusations of sexual assault.KING: San Luis Obispo, California, hello.
CALLER: Yes, hello. I’m wondering what a staffer would do besides go to the press in Washington? My daughter has just left there, after working for a prominent senator, and could not get through with her problems at all, and the only thing she could have done was go to the press, and she chose not to do it out of respect for him.
KING: In other words, she had a story to tell but, out of respect for the person she worked for, she didn’t tell it?
CALLER: That’s true.
So what were the problems Reade could not get through with, causing her to terminate her position as a staff assistant in Biden's office? The timeline makes it difficult to determine. Here the story changes as well. According to Wikipedia's article on the matter (much of what follows are quotes from it) in 2009 Reade had attributed her 1993 departure from Washington to moving to the Midwestern United States with a boyfriend. In 2018 she wrote it was due to her pursuing a career as an actress or artiste and due to her disappointment at the American government's "xenophobia" toward Russia.
In April 2019, the Associated Press interviewed Reade about the allegations she was making at the time, but did not publish an article because they found that parts of her story contradicted other reports and they could not corroborate her accusations. A short time later Reade contacted Vox reporter Laura McGann to tell her story. Vox did not publish any stories about Reade in 2019 after McGann failed to verify Reade's account, but McGann did write an article praising other women who had shared allegations about Biden's inappropriate touches. In May 2020, McGann detailed the allegations Reade made to her in 2019, including: "I don't know if [Biden] knew why I left ... He barely knew us by name." Reade sent her an essay that was similar to her essay published by The Union in 2019. McGann highlighted the following sentences, which were identical in both essays: "This is not a story about sexual misconduct; it is a story about abuse of power. It is a story about when a member of Congress allows staff to threaten or belittle or bully on their behalf unchecked to maintain power rather than modify the behavior."
By the time I got through the section about Reade's educational and work background, which listed a number of inaccuracies and outright lies I have come to the conclusion that Tara Reade is a thoroughly untrustworthy person. This is not to say that none of her allegations are true, but the number of times her story changed makes it extremely difficult to determine which, if any, are. As for her mother's phone call to Larry King, there is a vast chasm between what she actually said and what the usual publications conclude from it. The discrepancies between Reade's account of what her mother said and the actual recording. From the Wikipedia again: Reade previously said that Altimus [Reade's mother] called into Larry King Live anonymously "saying my daughter was sexually harassed and retaliated against and fired, where can she go for help?"[
