Yeah, give them green cards and they start committing all kinds of crimes. I almost got a ticket for jaywalking at age 18. Back then they did not deport you for jaywalking, so I’m still here.

I think Trump is going to hire Roseanne Barr. Apparently he needs an offcolour commentator.

As he sought to claim that illegal immigrants commit violent crimes at a higher rate than US citizens, Mr Trump was flanked by victims’ families holding a total of 11 photos of their dead relatives. In an unusual combination of bereavement and celebrity, all 11 photos were autographed by the president.

So having retreated on the separation policy Trump ploughs ahead and ramps up the self-aggrandising and dehumanising rhetoric...
Donald Trump sought in a speech in Nevada on Saturday to shift blame for the separation of immigrant children and their parents – and the pictures and recordings of ensuing distress that dominated world media this week – to his predecessors, George W Bush and Barack Obama.

As he did so, Democratic members of Congress demanded answers about how such children would be reunited with their mothers and fathers.

Trump was speaking at the end of a dismal week that saw uproar over his “zero tolerance” policy that resulted in more than 2,300 minors being separated from their parents before he backed down and ended the policy on Wednesday, signing an executive order that nominally though not conclusively halted the practice.

In a half-hour speech to a state Republican convention in Las Vegas, he offered nothing about how the families might be reunited.

“Everybody sees but this is the same sight that Obama had, that Bush had: same sight,” the president said. “It’s the same thing. In fact they said, ‘Look at this sight, look at President Trump, look at this picture.’ Excuse me, it was 2014 and it was President Obama. OK?”

He added: “Our people are actually doing a very good job handling a very difficult situation but this is a problem that should have been solved years ago,” the president said. “So we’re working very hard. The fact is we need more Republicans because the Democrats are obstructionists. They won’t vote.”

Trump acknowledged that immigration is an election issue. “Our issue is: strong borders, no crime. Their issue is: open borders, let [the gang] MS-13 all over our country. That’s what’s going to happen if you listen to them.”

He also criticised a Senate plan to hire more judges to deal with immigration cases, saying he wants more border patrol agents instead. He warned: “We will have millions and millions of people pouring through our country with all of the problems that would cause with crime and schools … If they see any weakness, they will come by the millions.”

Dehumanising, empathy-numbing rhetoric facilitates rises in the levels of disdain and outright hatred of 'others' that often presage the kind of state-sponsored atrocities carried 'in our name' that, ultimately, are very difficult to reconcile either politically or socially. The concern is that where America leads today others will be eager to follow tomorrow. Do Americans really want their country to be defined as the kind of 'shithole nation' Trump declares previous administrations have already made it?

I'm not watching that. Trump confirms a lot of things for me. I know it's depressing to have the personality Trump as president. It made me question all of the supposed progress we had made in attitudes. But it also proved --in case we needed any more proof-- that we're on the right track. If Trump and his supporters are what we're leaving behind, then it has become very clear why it's important to do so.

And I recommend you look to the logical consequences of your own objections to the Time cover illustration - and in so doing I invite you to publicly consider both what those objections communicate about your own views on the separatipn policy and the role journalism might play in reflecting truth to power.
The "logical consequences of my own objections to the Time cover...?" What logical consequences do you think necessarily follow?

I would say about truth to power, that one of the key words in that phrase is "truth." The story printed by Time along with that photo had a rather large correct - the online Time story initially flat out stated that this particular girl had been separated, and that the reporter with his years of experience had to watch her being taken away from her mother.

The reality of the story is you have a Honduran economic migrant who spirited away her daughter from her father - separated her daughter from her father (unilaterally - the father did not know it was happening) - and took the daughter on a coyote led trek across Mexican and American desert land, putting the child at significant risk. The US immigration personnel apphrehended them, because they were entering illegally, and they are now detained.

My own views on the separation policy are more complex. I certainly do not wish to see anyone's family's separated, but there are times when it happens. When a single parent is arrested for any number of offenses, there may be brief or even lengthy separations. They are tragic for the children involved, who are innocent of their parents' offenses. However, the law in the US is that the children that were separated cannot be held with the parents beyond a certain number of days, and then they have to be sent somewhere else. So, it's either separate the child from the parent, or release both the parent and the child. So, there needs to be a legislative change so that folks crossing in illegally will be detained in family units as their status is resolved. Most people crossing in do not qualify as asylees. Most are economic migrants, and are not entitled to visa status. The would need to be deported.

What's your view on it? Do you think that people crossing the Rio Grande should simply not be detained? If they are detained, how long? If they have children with them, how would you propose to handle the situation? Give them a notice to appear in court in the future and let them out on the street in El Paso or Phoenix or San Diego?

You don’t say ‘the army’ with the intensity,” she continued. “... But you say these names [Al Qaeda] because you want that word to carry weight. You want it to be something.” - Ilhan Omar

There is a solution to the illegal aliens. Give them temporary visas, one year at a time. Let them get real paperwork for everything and live among the residents. To encourage this, deport all without the visa as they are located. May take 10 years. Getting caught without a visa bans you from visa for 5 years. When you think your years in America are over, move back home and settle any retirement funds.
