I bet people would like it better roasted more lightly and 100% arabica, with no need to add sugar to make it drinkable.

and peaty single malt IS the best, gimme an Islay malt any day over a speyside.

It's a bar, anyway, not a cafe.
In Dutch:

A café or kroog is in English a public bar. A coffee shop is a café selling weed, snunk or hash but these days in a separated section of the café for which there is no English equivalent. A snack bar sells (unhealthy) snacks and cans of beer and other soft drinks and has limited seating (McDonald does not sell beer). A coffee bar is Starbucks and there is no other. We have plenty of bistro's.
So where do you go to just have a coffee, with perhaps some small food items (like cakes etc) available as well?
We dont really have that here. A bistro would probably be the nearest.

Britain seems to be hugely out of step with the rest of the world on coffee.
Maybe it's because we like tea so much, and tea is so easy and clean to make compared to coffee.

I found these figures amazing :

"When buying coffee for drinking at home, 77% of Brits buy instant coffee. Comparison: Italy 1%, France 4%, USA 7%. In 2014 5.06 million people in UK used at least 4 cups of instant coffee per day, while 2.81 million people used instant latte."

I personally find instant pretty yukky. Just once in a blue moon is ok, but I don't keep it, it goes off before I get round to using it. Has anyone tried Tassimo stuff? That is truly disgusting stuff. Well, the white is anyway.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Instant coffee is an abomination against God.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Agreed. It's up there with well-done steak, Velveeta "cheese", and chicken or turkey sausage.

I must confess, however, that I kind of like turkey bacon. It turned out to be much better than I expected.

Actually, nothing's as bad as well-done steak. I oppose capital punishment, but I can make an exception for people who overcook steak...

Instant coffee is OK as long as you accept it's a completely different beverage that just happens to have the same name as proper coffee.

I don't know about steak - being a vegetarian an'all - but I feel exactly the same about overcooked celery: "if it ain't got a crunch, I ain't going to munch." This saying has served me well in life.

Some instant coffee is worse than others. Moccona is quite good as far as the instant varieties go. I drink any instant coffee when I feel like having coffee but no real coffee is at hand. Largely due to my little espresso machine this has not happened for over four years.

I'd drink tea before instant coffee. Mrs. Lak's aunt drank probably 20 cups of the revolting stuff a day. I had to go dig the electric kettle out of storage.

Sorry to hear about your extreme dislike of so many things. I enjoy two or three mugs of tea a day. With honey and lemon.

The lemon is home grown. Unfortunately I might have to buy lemons in the near future. For the past couple of years it has shed its goodies before they are the size of golf balls. Three years ago they started getting smaller, but at least they did ripen. Might have something to do with it being 70 or 72 years old.

If it does not resume production by the time I've run out of the juice in the freezer, I'll chop it down.
