It's using your IP address. In a big country like Australia, your IP address doesn't correlate to where you actually live. In the Netherregions everything is just down the road.

Switching on location. I live on the border of three districts of the town. If I walk 100 metres in any direction are move into another district it places my position correctly. It gives the weather per district.

Well that should be impossible. It's one thing google using their own code to subvert your google app settings,but another for a third party app to subvert it.

It is happening. When installing an app how many people read all requirements it needs to operate? Nobody. I have noticed location a few times. It is not switch on long but just enough to get your location. Another app I use is My trails for walking. Exactly the same. Just wait until the ESA's network comes into operation the accuracy will be even better.

I suspect you are confused as there's not a single link in Google that I can find identifying this problem. When location is off its supposed to be off, regardless of whether an app has location privileges. What happens on my phone is that those apps request permissions each time they run. You can deny permission.

I'll tell you one thing it is definitely doing and that is allowing really stupid people to gather together to reinforce their stupidity. There are at least three flat earth groups on FB. Prior to the internet and Facebook you'd have to go hunting high and low to find other really stupid people with the same views as you. Now you just click a mouse and bingo - stupidity galore.
