I've got a Samsung S6, probably use 5% of it's capabilities. I do use it for GPS, and to look shit up on the Interwebz when I'm out and about, but not much more than that. The camera is OK for snapshot thingys. I've got an old S3 that I repurposed to an MP3 player.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

6 ways you can train yourself to stop using social media
Social media addiction is a pandemic that is sweeping across the technologically advanced world.

A group of former Facebook, Google and Apple employees recently launched a campaigner called the Truth About Tech, aimed at educating people about the methods these companies use to get users coming back again and again.

I didn't own a smart phone till work gave me one, and then after I resigned I didn't buy one for two years. I have several people have given me that I occasionally like to play with, and of course I use mine constantly for Internet stuffs. But I've got no social media life to speak of. The tech's just really cool.

Revealed: 50 million Facebook profiles harvested for Cambridge Analytica in major data breach

Whistleblower describes how firm linked to former Trump adviser Steve Bannon compiled user data to target American voters

A whistleblower has revealed to the Observer how Cambridge Analytica – a company owned by the hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer, and headed at the time by Trump’s key adviser Steve Bannon – used personal information taken without authorisation in early 2014 to build a system that could profile individual US voters, in order to target them with personalised political advertisements.

...

Documents seen by the Observer, and confirmed by a Facebook statement, show that by late 2015 the company had found out that information had been harvested on an unprecedented scale. However, at the time it failed to alert users and took only limited steps to recover and secure the private information of more than 50 million individuals.

The New York Times is reporting that copies of the data harvested for Cambridge Analytica could still be found online; its reporting team had viewed some of the raw data.

The data was collected through an app called thisisyourdigitallife, built by academic Aleksandr Kogan, separately from his work at Cambridge University. Through his company Global Science Research (GSR), in collaboration with Cambridge Analytica, hundreds of thousands of users were paid to take a personality test and agreed to have their data collected for academic use.

However, the app also collected the information of the test-takers’ Facebook friends, leading to the accumulation of a data pool tens of millions-strong. Facebook’s “platform policy” allowed only collection of friends’ data to improve user experience in the app and barred it being sold on or used for advertising. ...

In the coming Corp-Wars Facebook is dead meat - only Apple and Google will survive to divide the spoils... and Goldman Sachs of course.

Facebook doesn't seem as cluey to me as Apple, Google and Amazon. I know Google failed with Google+, but it's hard to see so many big data players surviving long term. I predict the fall of facebook! You heard it here second, folks!

Culture evolves. I predict being on the case of culture will speed it up as it attempts to the throw the parasite. Eventually a relationship between observing controllers and the observed controlled might arise. Not with today's media and people though. Too little trust and too much paranoia for a stable relationship. I predict the wild horse will throw the rider and stamp it to death. :read:

It's a style of writing where instead of expressing one idea in one clear sentence you cram in at least three, four or maybe half a dozen half baked ones. Ambitious - I'll give it that.

But no.
