Cambridge Analytica closing after Facebook data harvesting scandal

SCL Group and its Cambridge Analytica consultancy, which were at the centre of this year’s Facebook privacy row, are closing and starting insolvency proceedings.

The company has been plagued by scandal since the Observer reported that the personal data of about 50 million Americans and at least a million Britons had been harvested from Facebook and improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica.

Cambridge Analytica denies any wrongdoing, but says that the negative media coverage has left it with no clients and mounting legal fees.

“Despite Cambridge Analytica’s unwavering confidence that its employees have acted ethically and lawfully, the siege of media coverage has driven away virtually all of the Company’s customers and suppliers,” said the company in a statement.

“As a result, it has been determined that it is no longer viable to continue operating the business, which left Cambridge Analytica with no realistic alternative to placing the company into administration.”

The company has started insolvency proceedings in the US and UK. At Cambridge Analytica’s New York offices on an upmarket block on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, it appeared all the staff had already left the premises.

The Guardian rang the doorbell to the company’s seventh-floor office and was met by a woman who would not give her name but said she did not work for the company...

Anyone else reckon they'll just reboot under a different brand, like those restaurants that close down after six months, change the furniture, and open with a new name and all the staff?
Absolutely. With everyone freely giving all that Facebook information out, the temptation is too great - the information is too valuable. We've given it all to Facebook. The genie cannot go back in the bottle.

You don’t say ‘the army’ with the intensity,” she continued. “... But you say these names [Al Qaeda] because you want that word to carry weight. You want it to be something.” - Ilhan Omar

UK data regulator, the ICO, to fine Facebook the maximum £500,000 for its part in the Cambridge Analytica scandal. “Facebook has failed to provide the kind of protections they are required to under the Data Protection Act,”

That’s about five and a half minutes’ revenue.

yeah, the regulated fines are dreadfully low and definitely not high enough to be dissuasive.

That living Faustian political tragedy, Nick Clegg, is joining Facebook as head of global affairs. The man who oversaw the destruction of his political party, along with his political career, will become the public face of Facebook - representing and promoting it's interests to media outlets around the world.

They're think they are going to need Mr Clegg's specific political skills, insight and connection in order to continue their good work of taking over the world! :D

Can't imagine why Facebook would want a well-connected Cambridge graduate who speaks five languages as their head of communications.

Batshit crazy? Well, I've seen Nick called lots of things, but that's the first time I've ever seen his sanity questioned.

And I honestly don't think many current or potential Facebook customers particularly care who does the job he's doing. I bet they couldn't name the guy he's replacing, such is the importance of that role to their day to day lives.
