Cambridge Analytica closing after Facebook data harvesting scandal

SCL Group and its Cambridge Analytica consultancy, which were at the centre of this year’s Facebook privacy row, are closing and starting insolvency proceedings.

The company has been plagued by scandal since the Observer reported that the personal data of about 50 million Americans and at least a million Britons had been harvested from Facebook and improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica.

Cambridge Analytica denies any wrongdoing, but says that the negative media coverage has left it with no clients and mounting legal fees.

“Despite Cambridge Analytica’s unwavering confidence that its employees have acted ethically and lawfully, the siege of media coverage has driven away virtually all of the Company’s customers and suppliers,” said the company in a statement.

“As a result, it has been determined that it is no longer viable to continue operating the business, which left Cambridge Analytica with no realistic alternative to placing the company into administration.”

The company has started insolvency proceedings in the US and UK. At Cambridge Analytica’s New York offices on an upmarket block on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, it appeared all the staff had already left the premises.

The Guardian rang the doorbell to the company’s seventh-floor office and was met by a woman who would not give her name but said she did not work for the company...

Anyone else reckon they'll just reboot under a different brand, like those restaurants that close down after six months, change the furniture, and open with a new name and all the staff?
Already done, last month (see reference, below images).

I'd bet on it, Brian - at the very least, the major players in Cambridge Analytica will want to use their nefarious skills to start earning the big bucks again.

Perhaps Mark Z will give them a job? :tea:
They are in great demand apparently.

The Labour MP Jess Phillips was bombarded with more than 600 rape threats in a single night, she has revealed, as she called for online trolls to no longer be allowed anonymity.
Phillips said she is constantly the object of vicious abuse online, with the police having issued harassment orders against two people. She has concluded from her experience that parliament needs to force people to make their identities available to the likes of Facebook and Twitter – even if they are still able to remain anonymous to the general public.
“In one night, I received 600 rape threats. It was probably more but I stopped counting. To try to subvert that, I received thousands of comments from people saying ‘I wouldn’t even rape her’,” the Birmingham Yardley MP told the Cheltenham Science Festival...

Anonymity may give people the impression of being able to routinely engage in consequence-free harassment and abuse, but is total internet anonymity actually possible these days, and even if it is how many of these idiots are making the effort to cover their tracks?

I don't think anonymity is the problem. It's toxic masculinity. It needs serious addressing.

Infantile masculinity you mean? There's something sublime about observing the moronic. Let's not big it up?

I'm pretty sure women find it more toxic than infantile.

You're both right, but it's toxic, infantile mortality rather than masculinity, and most of that is down to an under-developed frontal lobe. These guys just have bad brains.

There's probably some truth to that, but I reckon nurture and education play a part.

Those under Trumps thumb. I mean that is mostly American women(and a few frightened men). Unless he invades North Korea and upsets the women there.(50/50) Women like May and Merkel....are disappointed not worried in Trumo. And if I can see Trump for the man-child he is....sure plenty of women outside the US can too. Imagine inside the asylum is different? I've sort of been there it is a different space when within....

That’s how the madness of the world tries to colonise you: from the outside in, forcing you to live in its reality rather than your own.
