Facebook. Reports of it's death were exaggerated.

That data thing was just a tiny blip to facebook.

I just looked and the share price has almost recovered. People were gleefully declaring how many billions Zuckerberg had lost. He's apparently just made billions back again. :sadcheer:

The stock market has only a tenuous grasp on reality. I don't know why people keep referring to it like it highlights anything other irrational over-(or under-)exuberance.

For a lot of people it is their main means of communication with friends and family. For them it would be like ditching their phone. Not going to happen any time soon.

My fans and followers are all over the world, so I certainly need it. :dq:

Facebook is like America(or The Roman Empire). Everyone inside and out declaring or wanting it gone. Then regretting that when it takes a temporary(or longer) dive.
What will the world be like after its ruler is removed?

It's probably a good buy at the moment.

https://seekingalpha.com/article/416737 ... key-metric

The data thing probably scared off buyers for a while, who suddenly realised that it's so reliant on the product being "in fashion".
If you are more confident that they are big enough to ride out blips, then right now is probably the cheapest time to buy facebook shares. That's what has probably driven the shares back up a bit.

Ugh facebook has just asked me if I want to turn on face recognition to allow them to "Help protect you from strangers using your photo to impersonate you" and "Find and show you photos that you're in but haven't been tagged in". How about fuck off and stop developing creepy software.

They're implementing a dating app. It's going to be one-stop shopping.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

We are doomed.

Cambridge Analytica closing after Facebook data harvesting scandal

SCL Group and its Cambridge Analytica consultancy, which were at the centre of this year’s Facebook privacy row, are closing and starting insolvency proceedings.

The company has been plagued by scandal since the Observer reported that the personal data of about 50 million Americans and at least a million Britons had been harvested from Facebook and improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica.

Cambridge Analytica denies any wrongdoing, but says that the negative media coverage has left it with no clients and mounting legal fees.

“Despite Cambridge Analytica’s unwavering confidence that its employees have acted ethically and lawfully, the siege of media coverage has driven away virtually all of the Company’s customers and suppliers,” said the company in a statement.

“As a result, it has been determined that it is no longer viable to continue operating the business, which left Cambridge Analytica with no realistic alternative to placing the company into administration.”

The company has started insolvency proceedings in the US and UK. At Cambridge Analytica’s New York offices on an upmarket block on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, it appeared all the staff had already left the premises.

The Guardian rang the doorbell to the company’s seventh-floor office and was met by a woman who would not give her name but said she did not work for the company...

Anyone else reckon they'll just reboot under a different brand, like those restaurants that close down after six months, change the furniture, and open with a new name and all the staff?

I'd bet on it, Brian - at the very least, the major players in Cambridge Analytica will want to use their nefarious skills to start earning the big bucks again.

Perhaps Mark Z will give them a job? :tea:
