Or the error margin is so small that it doesn't matter

But have you considered this inane question, NB?

Is it more damaging for that error to allow foreigners to vote, or to deny a citizen their right to vote?
Neither is acceptable.

There is no way to have 100% certainty.

Imagine there is a couple of identical twins. One of the two has lost the right to vote because of his criminal record. On election day, he murders his brother, takes his brother's passport and goes to vote. How would you stop that from happening?

Never mind that, both sides insist that there are no errors on their side worth notice.

One of them must be wrong.

Both are probably wrong.

I think Svartalf pointed out the problem - neither is acceptable.

We have a legal principle that it is better to let many of the guilty go, than to imprison one innocent citizen. That is pretty convincing, since a conviction is such a serious matter to the individual citizen.

This is a bit different, but I don't know where the errors are better. Is it better to allow some illegitimate votes, or to disallow some legitimate ones?

It is actually quite easy. A woman has at least one X chromosome.

You have asked the same question before. The answer is that if you have a working algorithm, the margin of error is so low in either direction, that the errors are acceptable.

Which doesn't answer what I'm asking...

Which is better?

I think denying a citizen the right to vote is safer than allowing non-citizens that right, but it is because I value the individual vote more than the individual liberty.

If denied your vote, legitimately, you have recourse, as a citizen, to address it.

If an unlawful vote is cast, the damage done doesn't allow for much in the way of remedy.

I went through a similar phase after reading Plato's Republic. God, was I that annoying? :worried:

Plato's Republic is one of his most annoying works, even more so as he puts his half baked silliness in the mouth of Socrates.

But it's so obvious that I just took that to be a teaching device.

I understand a lot of people hate Plato, but I love him. He's annoying as hell, but he's also so goddamned smart.

Socrates was smart, plato was his bad pupil... plato was to socrates what august derleth is to Howard Philips Lovecraft... and don't launch me on Aristotle, he had great discourse but he got nothing out of the lessons of Socrates as deformed by Plato...

 --poor Plato!

I haven't read much Aristotle. What I have has been from popularizes of science who seem to believe he was the more correct of the two.

Aye, many of Aristotle's presumptions and conclusions might have been off but his methods were pretty sound.
