At a meeting of CDU parliamentarians on Tuesday, Merkel told MPs to vote with their conscience during the vote, meaning there will be no compulsion to follow the party line. In an open vote, a gay marriage bill is almost certain to pass through the Bundestag.

How do you think their conscience will tell them? Do they tend to lean Southern Baptist, Unitarian or somewhere in between? I'm quite out of the loop since Schmidt Schnauze and Wiley Willy left the stage. Does the Bavarian CSU have any clout still? Or that wind vane, aka the FDP?

It doesn't really matter how the CDU and CSU members of parliament vote on Friday, since the other parties which are in favour of gay marriage have a clear majority in parliament.
The Social Democrats only withheld voting in favour over the last four years because of the coalition agreement with the Christian Democrats. Now as the term comes to an end, this being the last regular week of parliamentary sessions before the election in September, the Social Democrats had announced a few days ago, they would force a vote on gay marriage during this week and vote in favour.
Merkel's announcement is (a successful) plot to steal attention from the Social Democrats. She is very clever. This is all a decision / initiative of the Social Democrats, but again everyone is talking about Merkel.
