How in the hell do Americans believe they have the best health care in the world?

I just cant get my head around that, sorry. I have a CT scan in two days time and do you think I worry about costs?

It's gotta be a myopic focus on advanced medicine e.g. cancer treatment, where if you've got the money they do have the best.

But for regular health it all sucks. I've been ignoring a hernia for yonks because I don't want to pay for the surgery, opted out of surgery for a broken leg for the same reason, and most recently laughed hysterically at a 1,000+ bill for five stitches, offering to pay them 200 bucks instead...

I'd have done them for $100. Would just need 10mins to brush up on the YouTube how-to first. It's basically the same as patching a tail pipe right?

But seriously. Do Americans really think they have the best health care in the world?

Like I said Scot, if they focus on what advanced medicine can do then yeah, and rightly enough really.

But who cares when everything can bankrupt you and you have to ignore so much routine work?

The US does have the best healthcare in the world. Just because it is not affordable does not change that. The US does not have the best affordale public healthcare system for everybody, only for the elite.

People got sicker, with no care, for 2 years:
NPR
The number of ER patients is mostly back to normal, but patients are so much sicker
This isn't just happening at Sparrow.

"We are hearing from members in every part of the country," says Dr. Lisa Moreno, president of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM). "The Midwest, the South, the Northeast, the West ... they are seeing this exact same phenomenon."

The nonprofit organization behind a wide-reaching ad campaign against allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices has deep ties to pharmaceutical lobbyists.

A cable ad campaign has made a patient group called the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease ubiquitous on television screens in Washington, D.C., and 13 states including Arizona, Colorado and Georgia.

“Thirteen years ago, I noticed a lump on my stomach, and sure enough, they found a cancerous tumor on my liver. I’ve got to take about 22 pills a day,” a man named Bo says in one of the group’s ads. “Take it from someone who knows: Medicare price negotiation isn’t the answer.”
“These are the telltale signs of an astroturf operation,” said Meredith McGehee, executive director of Issue One, a Washington watchdog group, using a term to describe something that appears to the public like an independent group but is actually supported by a wealthy special interest.

The nonprofit does not disclose its funders.
But the possibility of Medicare being able to limit the prices of some of the drugs it covers might be the biggest challenge the pharmaceutical lobby and its advocates have faced.

“The day that Medicare gets the authority to negotiate drug prices, the entire U.S. prescription drug cost structure is going to be radically overhauled, and the uncertainty of all that is really unsettling for the industry,” said Oliver.

Aww, poor industry feels unsettled. Take an aspirin (go'on, you can afford it) and have a lie down in a darkened room with a cold compress.
