The explanation I heard the other day was that Erdogan had word of the coup preparations and got in before them by arresting a few people which forced the coupers to bring forward their plans and execute a sloppy take over attempt. To me, that sounds like a more reasonable explanation as it would be incredibly hard to keep a coup attempt secret that involved that many conspirators.
